Horoszki Małe: Linden, hillfort and village history
Accommodation in Horoszki Małe
Horoszki Małe can be understood through its natural monument, archaeological history and traces of earlier village life. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish these themes chronologically: the hillfort points to the Early Middle Ages, while the map, school history and other features of the locality reveal more recent chapters.
Natural monument and early local history
One specific natural feature is the protected small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata). It stands on the Bonin–Horoszki Mała road beside the property of P. Wedziuk. Its trunk circumference is 123 cm and its height is 24 m. These figures describe two different measurements: the circumference describes the trunk, while the height describes the entire tree. Thus, a precisely identified tree species is accompanied by specific measurements.
An early medieval hillfort is also located in Horoszki Małe. The term refers to a fortified site, giving it a different historical emphasis from the village history of the 19th century. Horoszki Małe existed as an independent village by the beginning of the 19th century at the latest and is shown on an Austrian map from 1801–1804. The hillfort points to the Early Middle Ages; the map entry records the place as an independent village several centuries later. These provide two points of chronological reference: an early site and a later record of the village.
School history and wooden cross
Another chapter in the locality's history is its former school. On the outskirts of Horoszki Małe, a brick primary school building with a teacher's apartment was built in 1957–1958 amid a pine forest. This identifies both the building's construction and its use as a school, as well as its additional residential function for a teacher. In 2006, the former school building was sold to a private owner for tourism and commercial use.
Horoszki Małe is also home to a low, blue-painted wooden cross dating from 1949, surrounded by a wooden fence. Its year of construction predates that of the school building, 1957–1958, giving it its own chronological place in the locality's history.
Earlier community activities
The school's former use also extended beyond teaching. The school in Małe Horoszki organized sports competitions as well as handball and football matches for neighboring schools and rural youth. In the 1960s, there were scout groups in Horoszki Małe; campfires, bivouacs and sledging trips involving local residents were frequent. Sport and community life thus represent two different forms of earlier activities: school competitions and games on the one hand, and community scouting activities on the other.
