Niemojewice: History and Kayaking on the Pilica
Accommodation in Niemojewice
Niemojewice lies on the left bank of the Pilica and is now one of the districts of Warka. It was once a village. Archaeological traces and kayaking routes give the destination two distinct points of interest: the history of the place and time spent on the water.
Archaeological Traces in Niemojewice
The settlement dates from the early Roman Imperial period, between 0 and 200 AD. Archaeological work uncovered a post-built dwelling in an orchard in Niemojewice. The dating places the site in an early period; the building discovery adds a specific structural finding.
Finds from excavations include pieces of slag, pottery shards, a spindle whorl, and other valuable objects. The slag may indicate the processing of bog iron ore. Thus, alongside the named finds, there is also a possible interpretation—and uncertainty about it.
Documents and Historic Trade Routes
One of the earliest written references to Niemojewice dates from the early 15th century. In a document from 1406, Poznań Bishop Wojciech Jastrzębiec transferred the tithe from the ducal village of Niemojewice to St. John’s Cathedral in Warsaw. This precisely dated written reference provides a point of comparison with the much earlier archaeological dating.
The 16th century is also part of the village’s history: Niemojewice was then home to an inn known throughout Masovia. It stood on a busy old trade route from Warka through Przybyszew to Nowe Miasto. The places named make the course of this historic connection tangible; the inn itself is part of that history.
Kayaking Trips of Different Durations
The Niemojewice–Warka kayaking section is 4 kilometers long and takes about an hour. It is considered a very short route. The duration may vary with water conditions, so treat the hour as an approximate planning estimate. The water entry is considered very welcoming.
The suggested Pilica kayaking route, Szlak Pilicy, takes considerably longer. A route proposal published on February 26, 2025, runs from Nowe Miasto nad PilicÄ… via Niemojewice to Mniszew on the Vistula. The route is 79 kilometers long and is intended to be completed over three days. This offers a comparison between a short trip of about an hour and a suggested multi-day route. Which timeframe suits you depends on how much room you want to give kayaking in your travel plans.
Walks in the Nearby Area
Near Niemojewice, between the Pilica and the embankment by Bielany and Niemojewice, lies an area currently overgrown with shrubs. Residents of Warka use it for outings and walks. This adds another perspective on the surroundings to the local history and kayaking routes: walks are described here in an area nearby, not as a feature of the kayaking route.
Different interests can therefore guide your choice of destination: the archaeological and written history of the place, the historic trade route, and kayaking routes with very different time requirements. Consider Niemojewice in light of these points of interest and decide which ones you would like to shape your stay.
