The Knights Hospitaller Castle is located in the center of Łagów on the strip of land between two lakes. Lake Łagowskie and Lake Ciecz, also called Lake Trześniowskie, are connected there by a shallow canal. This location combines the town’s points of reference with two different perspectives on Łagów: its historic buildings and its bodies of water.

Castle, fortifications, and building history

The 35-meter-high tower of the Knights Hospitaller Castle offers panoramic views of Łagów. Another distinctive building is the Marchian Gate, a valuable medieval element of the town’s fortifications. It was built in the 16th century on the site of a presumably wooden predecessor dating from the 14th century. The two dates thus refer to different construction phases: the assumed earlier predecessor and the gate built in its place in the 16th century.

The Church of St. John the Baptist can also be dated to specific years of construction. The stone and brick building in the Neoclassical style dates from 1725 and was remodeled in 1877. Together with the medieval gate, the church represents a different historical construction phase from the fortifications.

The railway viaduct built in 1906 on Mostowa Street is 40 meters long and about 25 meters high. Stairs lead up to it; from the top, there is a panoramic view of Łagów. With its known height and length and its stairway access, the viaduct is a different kind of viewpoint from the historic buildings in the center.

Lakes and recurring events

The connection between the two lakes in the center is a useful landmark: Lake Ciecz is also called Lake Trześniowskie, while Lake Łagowskie also features in route descriptions. You can enjoy the view of Lake Łagowskie from a boat, kayak, or pedal boat. This way, you can experience the town not only through its buildings but also from the water.

Cultural events include Lubuskie Lato Filmowe, which has been held in Łagów every year since 1969. Jarmark Smakosza is also one of the regularly held events. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates before making plans.

Compare trails by length, duration, and destination

Of the trails presented here, Sokola Góra is the shortest, at about 1.5 kilometers and around 40 minutes. It is located directly next to the Lower Castle area of Łagów. A longer route with a clearly named natural destination is Pawski Ług: the nature trail leads from the Lower Castle area for 12 kilometers to a peat bog reserve and back along the western shore of Lake Łagowskie.

The scenic route around Lake Łagowskie and the nature and cultural history trail around Lake Czarne are suitable for comparing estimated walking times. The easy scenic route around Lake Łagowskie is about 9 kilometers long and takes around two and a half hours. The route around Lake Czarne is listed as about 12 kilometers and around three hours. These approximate figures therefore show a difference of around three kilometers and half an hour.

The nature and cultural history trail Skansen Jemiołów leads from the Lower Castle area in Łagów for 13 kilometers to the agricultural open-air museum in Jemiołów. In this case, a specific destination is part of the route description. By contrast, the nature and scenic routes Bracikowo and Buczyna focus on their circular itineraries and the places they pass through: Bracikowo leads from Łagów via Jemiołów and Bracikowo back to Łagów and is 18 kilometers long. Buczyna runs via Sieniawa, Buczyna, Bucze, and Żelechów back to Łagów; this route is 22 kilometers long.

If you would also like to explore trails in the wider region, the Łagowskie Stowarzyszenie Turystyki Rowerowej i Pieszej has marked four cycling routes and six hiking routes through the landscape of Łagowsko-Sulęciński Park. The routes vary in length and difficulty. The regional trail network thus complements the described routes around Łagów with guidance specifically related to the park’s landscape.
