Horbów: Church History, Chapel and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Horbów
Horbów’s historical landmarks include a church, a chapel, and cemetery-related sites from different periods. The church can be dated particularly clearly: it was built between 1904 and 1908, while other church-related events followed in 1923. The chapel was built in 1934; a burial at the old cemetery dates back to 1794. These dates offer different ways into the town’s history without combining the places and events into a single story.
The Church and Its Different Historical Periods
The present-day church in Horbów was built from 1904 to 1908 as an Orthodox church on the site of an earlier Uniate church. Its construction thus connects two periods: the present building dates from the early 20th century, while the church site goes back to the earlier church. The former Uniate church is the predecessor at the site; “Orthodox” describes the original function of the new building. This distinguishes the two church-related references without assigning them to the same building phase. On August 17, 1908, Eulogiusz, the Orthodox Bishop of Chełm, consecrated the building. The construction period and the consecration are separate details: construction spanned several years, while the consecration is dated to a specific day.
Two further dates are significant for 1923. On June 26, the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education approved the transfer of the former Orthodox church to the Catholics. On September 23, the church was consecrated and given the canonical title “Przemienienia Pańskiego” (Transfiguration of the Lord). The June approval and the September consecration mark two distinct steps within the same year. Together with the Orthodox consecration in 1908, these dates distinguish the early construction years from the later church-related events.
The Chapel Built for the Parish Anniversary
The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of Mary was built in 1934 to mark the parish’s tenth anniversary. It stands at the bend in the road from Horbów to the church. On May 13, 1934, Bishop Czesław Sokołowski solemnly consecrated the chapel. Its construction year, occasion, location, and consecration date give a precise picture of the site: the building commemorates the parish anniversary, while the bend in the road describes its exact location. May 13 specifies the exact day of the consecration in 1934. Unlike the church, which was built over several years, the chapel was both built and consecrated in the same calendar year.
Cemetery Sites from Different Periods
A cemetery dating from the First World War is located in Horbów on the road to the church. A burial from a much earlier period concerns Stanisław Borkowski: the 24-year-old, who was killed in battle, was buried at the old cemetery in Horbów on December 23, 1794. One reference dates a cemetery to a particular period; the other records an individual burial with a name and date. This places a general history of cemeteries alongside the story of a specific person.
