If you are interested in cultural history, Budzów has several historical themes to explore. St. Wawrzyniec Parish Church, Budzów Palace, the development of the park and the Langer family tomb chapel represent different aspects of the town. The periods covered range from the 14th-century church to the park’s design in the late 19th century. When planning your trip, therefore, you may be guided not only by a single building but also by whether you are particularly interested in sacred architecture, a former palace function or the history of a garden.

St. Wawrzyniec Church and its furnishings

St. Wawrzyniec Parish Church is a 14th-century church building and is listed both in the monument register and in the heritage list. Its interior features Baroque and Rococo furnishings. One precisely dated furnishing is the black marble baptismal font from 1792. These features offer different points of reference in time: the church’s age places it in the Middle Ages, while the named furnishings point to further historical periods of design. The baptismal font adds a specific year and material to this picture.

The church’s history also includes its former cemetery. A wall surrounds the grounds, and four reconciliation crosses were later placed in the gatehouse. The church site therefore encompasses not only the interior furnishings but also the walled cemetery and its gatehouse. The four crosses are a distinct detail within this context. Visitors who consider historic buildings not only in terms of their age but also their individual features will find several aspects at this church site: building history, interior furnishings and the architectural elements of the former cemetery.

The palace and historic architectural forms

Budzów Palace represents a different period of construction and a former function. It was built between 1687 and 1702 as a former Cistercian curia of Henryków. The ground floor contains barrel vaults with lunettes. A barrel vault is a longitudinal, arched ceiling; lunettes are shorter vault sections that intersect the main vault. These terms describe a specific architectural form and the position of its elements within the palace. A comparison with the church therefore highlights different historical points of reference: a 14th-century church on the one hand, and a palace built between 1687 and 1702 that formerly served as a curia on the other.

From ornamental garden to park

The park’s history spans two separate periods. It was originally established as an ornamental garden in the early 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, the grounds north of the palace were planted mainly with chestnut trees and landscaped as a park. Its development therefore cannot be reduced to a single point in time: its history includes both the early ornamental garden and the later park design. The chestnut trees are identified as the predominant planting in the later period, not the only planting. The specific location associated with this design is the grounds north of the palace.

Another cultural-historical landmark

Budzów is also home to the Langer family tomb chapel. It adds a family-related aspect to the picture of the town’s cultural heritage. Together with the parish church and the palace, it shows that Budzów’s historical themes are not limited to a single architectural form or period.
