Jelenia Góra offers several highlights to consider when planning a trip: marked hiking trails in Borowy Jar, the Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy mountain bike network, and historical and cultural attractions. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you mainly want to spend time cycling, visiting viewpoints or exploring culture. The trail descriptions specify particular colours and destinations; the cultural attractions cover a range of themes, from military history to literature.

Hiking and Views in Borowy Jar

Borowy Jar has two marked hiking trails, one yellow and one green. Both lead from Jelenia Góra towards Siedlęcin. The green trail from Ścieżka Poetów leads to the TRAFALGAR viewpoint. From there, you can see the Bóbr Gorge, Jelenia Góra and the Rudawy Janowickie mountains.

The Trafalgar viewpoint is on the left bank of the Bóbr and can be reached via the green trail from Jelenia Góra or from the Bobrowice III power station. The trail information therefore specifies both the markings and the links to particular starting points. Another viewpoint is the 35-metre-high Grzybek Tower on Wzgórze Krzywoustego. Trafalgar is located on the riverbank, while Grzybek is on a hill: the names and location details help distinguish the two viewpoints.

Mountain Bike Trails in Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy

The official mountain bike trail network is called Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy and includes more than 70 kilometres of trails. It spans Jelenia Góra, Podgórzyn, Piechowice, Zachełmie, Przesieka and Borowice. The trail names draw on Slavic gods and demons: Perun, Utopiec, Doppler, Zmora, Borowy, Poświst, Skarbek, Licho, Błotnik, Rokitnik, Skrzat, Jaga, Leszy and Czart. The network’s naming brings together a range of distinctive names and the mountain biking theme; for navigation, the official name Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy is the common reference point.

History, Architecture and Cultural Attractions

The Grodzka Tower was built in the 15th century as one of 36 fortified houses designed to strengthen the city walls. Its construction history places it within the city’s former fortifications.

Zamek Baszta also has its own building history: the structure, built in the 14th century, collapsed in 1550 after a fire. The present building is a cylinder with a diameter of 7.57 metres and an octagonal upper storey; below it is a viewing platform with a railing. The information clearly distinguishes the historical collapse from the description of the present structure. This provides a concrete picture of the site’s form without conflating the current building with the original castle.

The Gerhart Hauptmann House City Museum in “Łąkowy Kamień” has collected memorabilia relating to the writer’s life and work since 2001. Its programme includes concerts, literary evenings, temporary exhibitions and other cultural events for adults and younger visitors. The collection and events thus have different focuses: one is on Hauptmann’s life and work, while the other is a cultural programme featuring several types of events.

In Jelenia Góra-Cieplice, the Natural History Museum is housed in part of a former Cistercian monastery. Together with the building histories of the Grodzka Tower and Zamek Baszta, this historical monastic connection complements the city’s cultural themes. When planning your trip, you can choose between architecture, literature and art workshops, as well as viewpoints and trails in the open air.
