Uniejów can be explored through a range of themes: the castle and collegiate church offer insights into architectural history, a historic town trail passes significant buildings, and routes in the spa district connect leisure facilities. SOWA and geothermal water offer further points of interest. Depending on your interests, you can focus your trip on historic architecture, walking routes or independent exploration.

Castle, Church and Tomb

The Castle of the Archbishops of Gniezno in Uniejów is a well-preserved 14th-century summer residence. It is also one of Poland’s best-preserved medieval defensive structures. “Summer residence” and “defensive structure” describe different aspects of the same castle: its historic use and its classification as a building with defensive features. These two perspectives offer a way into the castle’s history without conflating its different functions.

The Collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Gothic church built in 1349. A 14th-century ribbed vault has been preserved in the chancel. The vault is a specific architectural feature within the church, while 1349 is the year the church was built. The tomb of Saint Bogumił is also located in the collegiate church. The tomb, donated in 1666, is made of black marble and bears a semi-reclining bronze figure of the saint in episcopal vestments. The construction year and the year the tomb was donated mark different points in time: the tomb was added after the Gothic church was built.

Park and Geothermal Water

An English-style landscape park was created around the castle between 1860 and 1870. It was laid out at the initiative of the then owners, the Toll family. As a landscape park, it gives the site a different character from the medieval buildings; its creation belongs to a later historical period. Those viewing Uniejów through its buildings can also consider how the area around the castle developed.

Another point of interest is Uniejów’s geothermal water: it is almost 70°C and is extracted from a depth of two kilometres. Temperature and depth describe two different properties of the same water—its warmth and the point underground from which it is extracted. This natural feature adds another dimension to the historical perspective on the castle, church and park.

Routes, Spa District and Exploration

The historic town trail “Uniejowskie korzenie” passes the most significant historic buildings in Uniejów. The “Bulwary Nadwarciańskie” have a different focus: this walking route connects leisure facilities in the spa district. It has been extended with floating piers in the area around the beach and castle. If you are choosing between the two routes, the town trail focuses on historic buildings, while the Bulwary connect leisure facilities in the spa district.

The spa district includes a therapeutic footpath, a combined walking and cycling path, and a kayak landing. The three facilities cater to different ways of getting around. Check the current access conditions on site when making specific plans. This lets you choose a route based on the activities that suit you, without conflating the descriptions of the different paths.

SOWA in Uniejów offers another focus. A post dated 7 August 2026 mentions 26 research stations there, all developed by the Copernicus Science Centre, where visitors can explore and experiment independently. The information may change; if the number is important to your plans, check the latest details. This is a different way to explore from the historic routes: the focus here is on independent discovery and trying things out at research stations.
