Location and River Landscape

Poronin lies at an altitude of 740 to 800 metres above sea level, 7 kilometres northeast of Zakopane. Since the early 17th century, the village has been situated in a basin between Pogórze Gliczarowskie and Pogórze Gubałowskie, along the Poroniec, Zakopianka and Biały Dunajec rivers. To get your bearings in the landscape, it is also worth looking at the confluence: Poronin lies where the Zakopianka and Poroniec meet and the Biały Dunajec begins.

Rail and Road Connections

For travel planning, consider rail and road separately. A railway line runs through Poronin. National Road 47 also passes through the village, connecting Zakopane with Kraków. International Road 961 also runs through Poronin, in the direction of the former Polish-Slovak border crossing at Łysa Polana. The two roads lead to different destinations: one connects two named cities, while the other points towards a former border crossing. If you are considering Poronin as a place to stay, compare these connections with your own itinerary; for rail travel, check the relevant timetable.

School Museum of History and Regional History

Since 2015, the School Museum of History and Regional History has been housed in the Legions Polskich Primary School building in Poronin. Its collection comprises around 800 exhibits on the history of Poronin and Podhale, Gorals’ culture, regionalism, and people associated with Poronin. Individual exhibits may change. The museum is open to visitors Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visits at other times are possible by prior telephone arrangement with the school management.

Wańkówka and Its Cultural Role

Another cultural venue is Wańkówka, a historic, listed building of architectural, artistic and historical value. The house serves a public function in Poronin and is home to the Municipal Information Centre, the Municipal Cultural Centre, the Municipal Library, the Podhalan Association and the Gorals’ ensemble “Regle”. Unlike the collection at the school museum, the focus here is on the listed building and the public institutions housed within it. Wańkówka also lies on a recreational trail that runs from Poronin to Liptovská Kokava via Wołowiec. If you are planning a visit, check details about the institutions in advance.

Climbing Wall at the OSP Poronin Tower

A notice from July 2022 mentions a 12-metre-high climbing wall at the OSP Poronin tower. According to the notice, it may only be used under the supervision of qualified personnel and by prior appointment; users must bring their own equipment. Unlike the museum, which lists its visiting hours, the notice specifies that an appointment is required for the climbing wall. Before visiting, check whether the appointment and equipment requirements are still in effect.
