Proszowice: History, Green Spaces and Culture

Proszowice can be explored through several distinct themes: a medieval town layout, Jewish history, sacred art, parkland and local culture. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay. The places mentioned are not all in the same area: some are in Proszowice itself, while others are in the Gmina Proszowice or the localities of Kościelec and Bobin. Town history and sacred art

The historic urban complex of Proszowice is a well-preserved example of a medieval town layout. The focus is therefore not on a single building: the town layout itself is the historical point of reference. The Jewish cemetery in Proszowice was established at the end of the 18th century or in the first half of the 19th century. On 29 August 2023, a commemorative plaque was unveiled there as part of a memorial ceremony. This brings together different historical periods at the site: the establishment of the cemetery and a later-dated memorial ceremony.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist also offers a specific art-historical point of reference. Its main altar dates from 1634 and was created by Kraków sculptor Mikołaj Przybysławczyk. The date and the named artist give the altar a distinct historical significance. Together, the town layout, cemetery and church altar draw attention to different aspects of Proszowice’s history.

Town park and park design

The town park was established in the 1920s. It lies north of the town on the river floodplains and covers about four hectares between the Szreniawa River and its left-bank tributary. Its period of origin, location and approximate size make the park a distinct landscape feature alongside the historic town layout.

The former manor park in Bobin offers a different kind of parkland. It has retained its clearly identifiable compositional layout and a collection of trees of dendrological value. Here, both the design of the grounds and the trees are in focus. This distinguishes the park in Bobin from the town park in Proszowice, whose defining feature is its location between the waterways.

Routes and activities

A 14-kilometre section of EuroVelo 11, also known as EV11 or VeloNatura, runs through the Gmina Proszowice. The section was completed in 2023. The stated length refers to this section through the gmina, not to the entire route.

A route of about five kilometres was opened in Proszowice on 31 May as part of a Nordic walking event. The approximate route length offers a different point of reference from the EuroVelo 11 section through the gmina. If you are planning to use the Nordic walking route during a current visit, check its present condition in advance.

Culture and events

The Centre for Culture and Recreation in Proszowice combines regular classes with cultural events. The municipal report for 2023 describes ongoing regular classes and a particular focus on artistic activities for children and young people. This time-specific detail differs from the town’s enduring historical and landscape features.

Harvest festivals are held annually in Kościelec. The football tournament named after Leszek Kokosiński is also held there, with teams from Powiat Proszowicki taking part. The events have different points of focus: the harvest festival is an annual tradition, while the tournament can be identified by its name, location and participating teams. If an event date is important for your trip, check it in advance.
