Ponice combines hiking trails and a landscape of meadows and forests with a local history shaped by chapels and other cultural connections. When planning your trip, you can consider two questions separately: Which hiking destinations would you like to explore, and which aspects of the village interest you beyond its landscape? These priorities can help you assess Ponice as a travel destination and weigh your interests when looking for a hotel for your stay.

Hiking Trails to Maciejowa and Turbacz

A green hiking trail leads from Ponice to Maciejowa, which lies 815 meters above sea level. There is a mountain hut on Maciejowa. The green trail also runs via the Bacówka “Na Maciejowej,” Ponice, Rdzawka, and Piątkowa. This gives you a way to understand the route in relation to Maciejowa and the other named places.

A red hiking trail leads from Ponice to Stare Wierchy and onward to Turbacz, at 1,310 meters above sea level. The two trails differ in color, route, and destination: the green trail leads to Maciejowa, while the red trail goes via Stare Wierchy to Turbacz. Their elevations also provide a clear comparison: at 815 meters, Maciejowa is 495 meters lower than Turbacz. These features can help you choose a hiking destination that suits your travel plans. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The elevation figures indicate the destinations’ altitude above sea level, not the elevation gain from Ponice.

The Gorce Mountains, Meadows, and Local Connections

The Gorce Mountains surround Ponice and are considered the village’s main tourist destination. Meadows and forest trails invite you to take long walks and enjoy the views. In addition to marked routes, longer walks are another way to experience the landscape. Kotelnica is associated with stone cellars and the landscape along the upper course of the Poniczanka. This local connection adds built features and a specific landscape reference to the hiking destinations.

Chapels and Local History

Numerous wayside chapels are considered witnesses to the village’s history; there are also a few historic examples of folk timber construction. The two references highlight different aspects: the chapels represent the many religious landmarks along the way, while timber construction is represented by a small number of historic examples.

A local history of faith is associated with the old chapel at Sołtysówka. A religious devotion developed there, in which the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa played an important role. The local people particularly venerated the image and believed it to have miraculous powers. The PRYMNI regional group is also active at the ZSPiG in Ponice. Together with the historic chapels and examples of timber construction, it offers another specific connection to local culture.
