In Tymbark, cultural themes range from sacred heritage to various historical routes. For travelers interested in local history, both individual sites of remembrance and two clearly distinct routes are central. This lets you plan your trip around your own interests: sacred heritage, the history of the German occupation, or the route of a named trail.

Sacred heritage with a history of its own

The baptismal font in the church in Tymbark comes from the old church and dates to 1541. Stylistically, it is attributed to the Gothic-Renaissance period. Its date, design and provenance each give the font its own historical significance: it is a tangible example of sacred art and also points to the older church it came from.

A sandstone chapel tells a different story of place. It was funded by residents of Tymbark and built in 1870. In 1975, the chapel was moved to its present location beside the parish church in Tymbark. Its construction and relocation mark two different moments in its history. It thus complements the baptismal font with another part of the cultural heritage, shaped by its material and change of location.

Soldiers’ Cemetery No. 365 was established as a separate section beside the existing parish cemetery. Its designation and location in relation to the parish cemetery provide another historical point of reference in Tymbark. Together with the chapel and baptismal font, it represents a different way of exploring local history than the themed trails.

Two different routes through history

The tourist and educational trail exploring the history of the German occupation has its central point in the market square in Tymbark, which is also the starting and ending point. From there, the route leads to several historic sites from that period. It comprises six stops about the underground activities of residents of Tymbark and the surrounding area from 1939 to 1945. Each stop has information boards and photographs from the occupation period describing important events at that location. The trail therefore has a clear historical focus and connects it with several stops.

A branch of the Szlak Papieski follows a different route: it leads from Tymbark over Łopień to Chyszówki. The difference from the occupation trail lies in the subject matter and the way the route is mapped out: here, a route linking named places takes center stage, while the other trail offers a six-stop exploration of the history of the occupation. You can choose whether you are more interested in the themed local history trail or the route of the Szlak Papieski.

Information boards with maps of the routes traveled by Karol Wojtyła have been installed beside the railway station, in the market square and beside the SKR in Tymbark. These three locations provide specific points in town to help orient visitors to the routes.

Library and practical trip planning

The Tymbark Public Municipal Library, named after Captain Tadeusz Paolone, has a lending library, a reading room and an internet reading room. It also includes a national memorial site, a conference room and an exhibition room. The different spaces bring together reading and commemoration with facilities for conferences and exhibitions. If you plan to visit the library, check the current visitor arrangements beforehand.

When planning what to see, it is worth distinguishing between individual cultural heritage sites and themed routes. The baptismal font, chapel and soldiers’ cemetery are each historical points of reference in their own right. The occupation trail, by contrast, brings together six stops around a clearly defined theme, while the Szlak Papieski leads over Łopień to Chyszówki. The perspective you choose to shape your stay in Tymbark can also guide your search for a suitable hotel for your trip.
