Chrzanów offers several ways to explore the city’s history: the medieval layout of the market square, collections in the Lamus Dworski, traces of Jewish life and St. Nicholas Church. If you are considering the city as a travel destination, these themes provide a concrete cultural context for planning your trip. They range from urban layout and crafts to religious art and Jewish burial culture.

Market Square and City History

Chrzanów preserves the medieval grid layout of the market square, with streets branching off from it. In the past, city life was centered on the market square. This brings together two distinct periods: the square was once the center of city life, while the preserved layout reveals the historic structure of the town today. The market square therefore offers a way to explore Chrzanów’s development alongside the museum’s exhibits.

The Muzeum w Chrzanowie in the Lamus Dworski

The Lamus Dworski dates back to the 16th century and is now home to the Muzeum w Chrzanowie. The Chrzanów exhibition displays two of the five town books held by the museum, dating from 1908 to 1936. It also features objects relating to the history of crafts and trade: tools and guild memorabilia, including books, seals, a book-shaped shop counter, guild emblems, a sash and the banner of the butchers’ guild. The different objects offer insight into various aspects of city life, without limiting the collection to a single craft.

A model shows a church and its immediate surroundings at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The church furnishings on display also include chalices and a paten. If these particular exhibits are important to your plans, confirm with the museum before your visit that they are currently on display.

Jewish Heritage and the Cemetery

Among the museum’s most valuable collections is a Judaica collection. It presents the material and spiritual culture of the Jewish community, which accounted for more than half of the city’s population until the outbreak of the Second World War. The Jewish cemetery in Chrzanów dates back to the mid-18th century and preserves traces of Jewish burial culture. Many gravestones bear symbolic depictions; some particularly elaborate examples date from the early 19th century.

The inscriptions on the gravestones are almost exclusively in Hebrew. Several dozen also have additions in Yiddish, German and Polish. This linguistic diversity and the varied designs offer two specific ways of looking at the cemetery: its visible symbols and the languages preserved in additional inscriptions.

For organized groups, the Muzeum w Chrzanowie offers educational walks through the Jewish cemetery and guided tours from April 15 to October 15. In favorable weather, these may exceptionally also be available outside this period. The museum accepts reservations by telephone. As arrangements may change, confirm the availability of the offer and how to book with the museum before your visit.

Church Art and a Self-Guided Quest

St. Nicholas Church has a Gothic presbytery and a Baroque chapel dedicated to St. Stanislaus. The church also contains a mosaic of the Madonna and Child: Pope Leo XIII gave it to Henryk Loewenfeld in 1888, and Loewenfeld then donated it to the church. The architecture and mosaic thus lead to different aspects of the church’s history, from the building itself to a single work of art with a known history.

The self-guided quest “Śladami Loewenfelda” uses Henryk Loewenfeld as a guide to Chrzanów’s history from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The route takes less than two hours and starts at the main entrance of the Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna, at 10C Broniewskiego Street. Before setting out, check whether the quest is currently available to download or in the app. Chrzanów also lies on the Szlak Miejsc Papieskich na Ziemi Chrzanowskiej.
