Golub-Dobrzyń combines architectural history with a specific destination to visit: Golub Castle. The town is one of the places along the Copernicus Route, a cultural and historical tourist route linking places associated with the life and work of Nicolaus Copernicus. The buildings here also reflect different periods—from the Gothic chancel to a former prayer hall dating from 1909.

Church Architecture and City History

The Gothic chancel of the Kościół p.w. św. Katarzyny in Golub was built in 1293. The same church contains a Baroque wooden altar, commissioned and made in 1640 by Krzysztof Lody, the deputy starosta, and the townspeople. The chancel and altar therefore provide two clearly dated reference points in the church’s architectural and interior history: 1293 and 1640.

The defensive walls of Golub-Dobrzyń were built in the first half of the 14th century, and their course has been preserved to this day. Older fortifications may have been converted into walls in the process. The old wooden arcade house in Golub is the last of several houses of this kind that remained until recently and once surrounded the market square. The walls, arcade house, and church represent different forms of the architectural heritage.

Another historic building is the former Evangelical prayer hall. It was built in 1909 in the Neo-Gothic style and has a 30-metre-high tower. Today it houses a primary school. Its current use is therefore different from its former function as a prayer hall.
