Chełmno’s history can be explored from several perspectives: the Old Town preserves a medieval grid plan, and the brick city walls define the city’s appearance. Other highlights include a viewing terrace at the parish church, a museum in the town hall, and places with their own thematic focus.

Old Town and medieval city walls

The almost completely preserved city walls of Chełmno are 2,270 metres long. They were built from the mid-13th to the mid-14th century. Their length gives a sense of the scale of the fortifications, while the long construction period points to work carried out over several decades. The walls thus offer a different perspective on the city’s history from the Old Town’s street grid.

The medieval grid plan is preserved in the Old Town. Here, the focus is on the layout of the streets, while the city walls are a large-scale structure. Anyone interested in historic urban planning can view these two features as different ways of exploring Chełmno’s history: the design of the urban space on the one hand, and its fortifications on the other.

Views from the parish church

The parish church’s viewing terrace offers another perspective. The northwest spire is 60 metres high; from the terrace, you can see across Chełmno, with its medieval grid of streets, to Świecie, over the Chełmno region, and into the lower Vistula Valley. The viewpoint therefore combines views of the city with a broad panorama of the surrounding area. Check the current access arrangements for the terrace before your visit.

Museum, castle models and walks

The Muzeum Ziemi Chełmińskiej is housed in the town hall. Its permanent exhibitions cover the history of Chełmno and the surgeon Ludwik Rydygier. If these topics suit your visit, check the museum’s current visitor information in advance.

Since 2013, the Park Miniatur Zamków Krzyżackich in Rydygiera Park has displayed nine medieval castle models at a scale of 1:30. The castles represented include Malbork, Toruń, Radzyń Chełmiński and Papowo Biskupie. The consistent scale and the nine models offer a different way to explore medieval architecture than the city walls themselves: here, individual castles are the focus, in miniature.

Osada Rycerska is a tourist and educational site featuring, among other things, a torture chamber and an archery range. Chełmno’s two Planty parks, meanwhile, are popular places for residents to stroll along their shady paths. The New Planty also contains a small chapel called “Studzienka.” These places range from themed attractions and models to green spaces and a chapel.

Annual celebrations and longer routes

Chełmno hosts Walentynki Chełmińskie, annual Valentine’s Day celebrations. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates before making arrangements, as no single event date is specified here.

For longer outings, the Chełmno PTTK guides’ association offers walking and cycling routes several kilometres long. These include “Szlakiem Panoramy Chełmna” and “Szlak Fortyfikacji Chełmna.” Their names already suggest different themes: panoramic views on one route, fortifications on the other. If you are considering a tour, check the current options.

When choosing a hotel in Chełmno, you might first consider which side of the city you want to shape your stay: its street plan and fortifications, the view from the church tower, the museum and castle models, walks, or a longer hiking or cycling trip. Walentynki Chełmińskie offer another reason to visit, for which it is important to check the specific dates.
