In the Blue Cave on Tanna, light streams through an opening in the cave roof onto the blue water. This natural attraction is one of several different experiences in Tafea: Tanna’s landscape is also shaped by its volcano and coastline, while other islands offer their own highlights, such as a lagoon, local legends or ancient kauri trees.

Tanna: Volcano, Cave and Coast

Visitors can reach the Blue Cave from the arrival point by boat or road, and enter the cave by swimming. Tides and sea conditions can affect visits, so it is advisable to check conditions in advance. The cave opening directs light onto the water, giving the Blue Cave its distinctive blue appearance.

Mount Yasur on Tanna is an active volcano with molten lava and dramatic eruptions. The coast also offers a variety of natural experiences: coral reefs on the west coast are ideal for snorkeling and diving. Many underwater caves and swim-throughs around Tanna are also accessible for snorkeling. There are hot springs on the east coast. At Port Resolution on Tanna, you’ll find beaches with white and black sand.

Culture and Encounters on Tanna

The custom tour in Yakel Custom Village shows how villagers live their traditional daily lives; Western ways of life are not encouraged there. The Nekowiar ceremony brings neighboring villages together for three days of gift-giving ceremonies, traditional dances and feasts. If you’d like to plan your trip around this ceremony, check the dates in advance.

Every Friday evening, visitors can experience the followers of the John Frum movement in Sulphur Bay through music, dance and storytelling. It is advisable to seek local confirmation before your trip. The Black Magic Tour in central Tanna includes horse riders, a coffee plantation and colorful Tanna face painting. Another natural attraction is the Giant Banyan Tree, which is said to be among the largest banyan trees in the world.

Other Islands: Lagoon, Legends and Kauri Forest

On Futuna, Moon Rock is a distinctive rock formation associated with local legends. Mystery Island, an uninhabited island with crystal-clear water and colorful coral reefs, can be reached via Aneityum. Aniwa offers something different: its shallow, turquoise lagoon is ideal for swimming and exploring marine life.

On Erromango, visitors can walk among enormous kauri trees in the Kauri Forest; some are over 1,000 years old. The natural experiences are therefore quite distinct: Aniwa offers a lagoon and water, while Erromango offers walks among ancient trees. On Tanna, meanwhile, you can include volcanic landscapes and coastal experiences in your travel plans.

When planning a hotel stay, it can help to first choose the island whose experiences you want to shape your trip. Domestic flights connect Port Vila with Tanna, Aneityum, Futuna and Erromango.
