Port Vila is situated on a natural harbour; the views extend to the islands of Iririki and Ifira and as far as Malapoa Point. Visitors are recommended to take a walk along the waterfront at sunset. A glass-bottom boat trip also offers a different way to experience the water.

Harbour and Waterfront

The Reef Explorer offers a one-hour glass-bottom boat trip with a local guide, departing from the Port Vila waterfront. You can view coral and tropical fish without getting wet. Sightings are not guaranteed. The trip combines a set duration with a guided perspective on the underwater world; a sunset walk remains a separate way to experience the waterfront.

Cultural Sites in Port Vila

At the Vanuatu Cultural Centre, visitors can learn about Vanuatu’s traditional Indigenous cultures. These include sand drawing, music, land diving, kastom practices and Indigenous knowledge. The “Sounds of Vanuatu” audio offering takes a different approach: it focuses on contemporary art and music from Vanuatu and includes jungle sounds and songs.

The National Museum of Vanuatu displays traditional objects such as masks, sculptures and ancient tools. The Suzanne Bastien Foundation exhibits works by local and international artists. The three venues therefore have distinct focuses: the museum centres on objects, the Cultural Centre presents cultural topics and practices, and the Foundation exhibits artworks.

Excursions in the Surrounding Area

In the area around Port Vila, Ekasup Cultural Village offers guided tours that provide insights into Melanesian traditions and the kastom of the Ni-Vanuatu. Check whether tours are available before making firm plans to visit.
