Runanga: Mining History and Trails at Coal Creek
Accommodation in Runanga
Runanga can be explored through two distinctive themes: the history of its miners and the trails at Coal Creek. The former Runanga Miners' Hall tells the story of the labour movement, while tracks lead through forest and valley to Coal Creek Falls. If you’re looking for a hotel in Runanga, these different themes can help you plan your stay.
Mining History in Runanga
The former Runanga Miners' Hall is classified as a Category 1 Historic Place. Its significance is closely tied to the history of the working class, the organised labour movement and the Labour Party in New Zealand. It is one of only two known miners’ halls preserved at their original site, and the only hall directly associated with the founding of the Labour Party. This classification makes it a distinctive historical landmark in Runanga.
The large 1908 miners’ hall in Rūnanga is also part of the town’s history: it was the setting for numerous meetings during the strike. Together, the halls represent different aspects of mining history—from meetings during the strike to connections with the organised labour movement. For travellers interested in the history of the Labour Party, Runanga offers a tangible local connection.
Forest Trails and Coal Creek
The Coal Creek Track descends through mixed beech and podocarp forest into the Coal Creek valley. For directions, the car park is at the end of Ballance Street and can be reached via Seddon Street. This gives you a specific starting point for the walk. The route through forest and valley has a different character from the route focused more closely on the waterfalls.
Coal Creek Falls: Loop Track and Pool
The Coal Creek Falls Track is an easy 3.6 km loop that takes 60 minutes to walk. The approach to the falls leads through lush rainforest. Benches offer views of Coal Creek Falls, and steps lead down to the pool at the foot of the falls. The pool is suitable for swimming during the hot summer months. Along with the rainforest walk, the route has a clearly defined destination by the water.
The Coal Creek Falls Track once led to the West Coast’s first commercial coal mine. This former use gives the loop a historical connection, while rainforest, waterfall and pool shape the scenery today. The distance and walking time can help you fit the loop into your day’s plans; swimming is specifically suitable during the hot summer months.
More to Explore in the Grey District
Runanga is part of the wider Grey District, where other towns and landscapes offer their own places to visit. Lake Brunner and Moana are home to diverse birdlife, wetlands and rainforest ecosystems. The Lake Brunner Scenic Trail runs along the lake’s north-western shore and is suitable for walkers and cyclists; check local conditions before setting out. For a longer route, the 132 km West Coast Wilderness Trail is graded easy and runs from Greymouth to Ross.
Shantytown also offers another perspective on the Grey District: the heritage park is in Paroa, 10 km south of Greymouth. Experienced gold miners guide visitors as they try their hand at gold panning. Admission includes a ride on one of the three historic passenger trains; as admission inclusions can change, check before your visit. This lets you include Runanga’s local mining history and other Grey District attractions separately in your travel plans.
