Taupo District combines nature experiences with a distinctive cultural focus: in Tongariro National Park, its dual World Heritage status recognises significant Māori cultural and spiritual connections. The area also offers trails along rivers and lakes, waterfalls, and the Tongariro National Trout Centre in Tūrangi. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, you can first decide whether World Heritage, a particular route, or water and forest landscapes will shape your stay.

Tongariro: World Heritage and Route

Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand’s three World Heritage sites. Its dual World Heritage status recognises the park’s significant Māori cultural and spiritual connections. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing also lies within the dual World Heritage area. This lets you consider the park’s cultural significance and a specific named route together when planning your trip.

River Trail and Trout Centre in Tūrangi

The full Tongariro River Trail loop is 13.2 km long and can be started at the Tūrangi isite. The trail is shared by anglers, dog walkers and mountain bikers; cyclists must give way to pedestrians.

The Tongariro National Trout Centre in Tūrangi includes a museum, a freshwater aquarium with native species, a historic trout hatchery and an underwater viewing chamber.

Water Landscapes and Trails

Lake Taupō is Australasia’s largest freshwater lake. At Huka Falls, nearly a quarter of a million litres of water per second plunge 11 metres through a natural gorge into the Waikato River; walking tracks run on both sides of the falls. The Great Lake Trails pass through lush native forest, past waterfalls and across deep gorges to the waters of Lake Taupō. A boat shuttle connects the different sections of the trails and offers pick-ups and drop-offs at several scenic bays along the route. Check the boat shuttle’s current booking conditions before planning your trip. The Great Lake Pathway starts at Taupo Boat Harbour, is mostly flat and offers a family-friendly outdoor experience. When choosing a route, this means the Great Lake Trails focus on forest, waterfalls, gorges and the boat connection, while the Great Lake Pathway is clearly defined by its start at Taupo Boat Harbour and its mostly flat, family-friendly character.
