Murchison: Whitewater, History and Nature
Accommodation in Murchison
Murchison is a historic gold-mining town, described as a paradise for whitewater activities because of its many rivers. Its character also includes historic buildings in the town centre and a variety of natural attractions. The following places and activities show how these interests can be found in Murchison.
Whitewater and leisure activities
Murchison Recreation Reserve encompasses Murchison’s main recreational facilities. It is home to the Four Rivers Flow Zone, an all-weather pump track for all skill levels, completed in 2024. New Zealand Kayak School offers stationary whitewater kayaking courses in Murchison for paddlers of all abilities. Both activities cater to a broad range of abilities: the pump track is for all skill levels, and the kayaking courses are for paddlers of all abilities.
Murchison Sport, Recreation and Cultural Centre is a multi-purpose events venue. New Zealand Kayak School and the Centre therefore represent different aspects of the town’s recreational and event offerings.
History in the town centre
Murchison is a historic gold-mining town; many buildings in the town centre have been preserved in their original form from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This links the town’s gold-mining history to a tangible feature of its townscape. Murchison Museum provides an information service on tourist activities, attractions and places of interest.
Forest and views
Murchison Skyline Walkway runs through mixed beech and podocarp forest, as well as areas of native ferns, bracken and gorse, on the outskirts of town. The walkway offers views of Kahurangi National Park to the north. Kahikatea Reserve is a remnant of the lowland podocarp forest that once characterised the plains around Murchison, with kahikatea and mataī trees and lush fern undergrowth. The two nature destinations offer different highlights: the mixed forest and views along the walkway, and the once-characteristic lowland forest at Kahikatea Reserve.
Places nearby
Nearby recreational destinations are also described with specific locations. Murchison Golf Course is a 9-hole course, 2 km north of Murchison on Kawatiri Murchison Highway. Johnson Creek Track starts 7 km west of Murchison, 6 km along the unsealed Matakitaki West Bank Road. The two locations differ both in direction and in what they offer: the golf course is to the north, while the track starts west of town.
