New Plymouth: Parks, Coastal Walkways and Culture
Accommodation in New Plymouth
New Plymouth brings together botanical gardens, coastal paths, cultural attractions and a zoo. If you’re looking for a hotel in New Plymouth, you can plan your trip around which aspects of the city interest you most. Its attractions offer different ways to explore the city: from an expansive park to a long coastal route, as well as art, exhibitions and wildlife viewing.
Parks, Coastal Route and Walking Paths
Pukekura Park is in the heart of New Plymouth, covers 52 hectares and is considered one of New Zealand’s leading botanical gardens. Lakes and walking paths through native bush are part of its character, as are the Fernery and Display Houses. These consist of three glass-roofed caverns dug into a hillside. If you’re interested in plants and landscaped gardens, you’ll find a different focus here than along the coast: botanical gardens, bodies of water and bush paths shape the impression of the park.
The Coastal Walkway runs for 13.2 kilometres from Port Taranaki to the eastern end of Bell Block Beach. It is paved and has some gentle slopes. In addition to walking and running, it is also used for cycling, skateboarding, skating and scootering. Its length and range of activities make the Walkway a distinct route option; choose it based on your planned route and preferred activity rather than comparing it with the walking paths in the park.
Another walking connection is the Te Henui Walkway. It follows the Te Henui Stream and links the Coastal Walkway with the suburbs of Merrilands and Welbourn. This differs from the coastal route in its stated function: the focus here is on a connection along the stream between named areas of the city. To find your way around, it’s worth considering these paths as different ways to explore New Plymouth rather than combining them into a single route.
Exhibitions, Art and Local History
Puke Ariki is at 65 St Aubyn Street in the centre of New Plymouth, opposite the Walkway and the Len Lye Wind Wand. In the New Plymouth District, Puke Ariki has three permanent exhibition galleries dedicated to the region’s history, taonga and natural world. Its location and exhibition themes offer a cultural complement to the walking paths and parks; when planning, you can weigh up a focus on local history, regional taonga and nature against spending time outdoors.
The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery | Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth is a founding member of the Coastal Arts Trail. This self-guided route visits art galleries and museums on the west coast of the North Island, from Wellington through Palmerston North and Whanganui to New Plymouth. The Trail connects the city to a wider regional arts scene, while Puke Ariki’s permanent exhibitions explore the region’s history, taonga and natural world.
Te Henui Vicarage is also part of New Plymouth’s history. The building is classified as a Historic Place Category 1 and has a direct connection to the founding of the Church of England in New Zealand. The coat of arms of Bishop Selwyn of the undivided Diocese of New Zealand is embodied in the masonry. The Vicarage is privately owned and not open to the public. Its historical significance is therefore part of the city’s context, but it does not offer a public interior visit to include in your plans.
Brooklands Zoo and Practical Information
At Brooklands Zoo, you can see farm animals, reptiles and amphibians, meerkats, Bolivian squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys and white-faced sakis, among other animals. Colourful birds live in a walk-through aviary. Visitor facilities also include a playground and outdoor areas. If animals and the aviary are your main interests, the zoo offers a different focus from Pukekura Park or the art and exhibition venues.
Brooklands Zoo can be accessed from the upper end of Brooklands Park Drive. It can also be reached on foot from the city centre via Pukekura Park. These two options help you find your way without implying a walking time. When looking for a hotel in New Plymouth, you can first decide whether parks and paths, the coastal route, culture or the zoo will shape your trip. Then compare the specific details of each hotel offer; the city attractions listed here alone don’t indicate the facilities or location of individual hotels.
