Hampden combines a beach stay with specific historical points of interest. Along the Pacific Coast on State Highway 1, Hampden is one of the towns where visitors can stroll on the beach or stop for a coffee. The coast and local history offer different focuses when planning your stay.

Local history between the church and Heritage Trail

Hampden Presbyterian Church is listed as a Category 2 Historic Place. It was built from local stone, including limestone from Hampden and Kakanui. Its foundations are made of Moeraki bluestone, and the roof is slate. Its heritage status and the origins of its materials give you two specific points of reference if you are interested in architectural history.

The Hampden Heritage Trail is a walking route to various historic sites that starts at the old Hampden Hotel. It includes Hampden Cemetery and a war memorial. The walk therefore takes in several named places rather than focusing on a single building.

Beach, tides and coastal experiences

Hampden Beach has a children’s playground with replica boulders. At low tide, you can walk from Hampden Beach to the Moeraki Boulders. The Moeraki Boulders on Koekohe Beach are spherical stones that formed more than 60 million years ago. They are most accessible and visible at low tide. There is a public car park at the boulders; from there, a short walk of about 5 to 10 minutes leads to the beach. For planning purposes, it is worth distinguishing between the different starting points: the short walk starts at the car park, while the walk to the boulders at low tide can start from Hampden Beach.

Hector’s dolphins are often spotted in the surf off Hampden. This adds an opportunity to appreciate the coast as a habitat from the shore to your beach walks.

Otago as a wider travel destination

Otago offers outdoor experiences in open tussock country, by lakes and in the mountains. One regional example is the 10 km Kānuka Track, a circuit with views of Lake Dunstan and the Upper Clutha Valley. It passes through regenerating kānuka woodland and along impressive rocky cliffs. The Otago Central Rail Trail stretches for 152 km along the former railway line between Middlemarch and Clyde. On the Otago Peninsula, cliffs, bays and beaches provide habitat for penguins, seals, sea lions and numerous seabird species. Compared with Hampden’s beach and history themes, these examples show the wider range of landscapes in the broader destination of Otago.
