Brighton is a small coastal town on the Southern Scenic Route within the city limits of Dunedin. When choosing a hotel location, the beach, walks and local life give you a concrete impression of what makes Brighton distinctive. Brighton Beach and the Otokia Creek Track offer different ways to experience the coast.

Beach, low tide and a coastal walk

Brighton Beach lies along the popular Southern Scenic Route and is sheltered by rocks. At the southern end of the beach, Barney’s Island can be explored at low tide. The tide is therefore an important timing consideration for this outing. There is also a stream beside the beach where you can paddle. So, alongside the beach itself, the coastal town offers both an exploration tied to low tide and an activity in the stream.

The short Otokia Creek Track runs from Brighton Bridge to the start of Brighton Beach. It follows the meandering Otokia Creek through sand and tall grass. When planning, you can distinguish this walking option from Barney’s Island: the track connects the stated endpoints, while the island can be explored at low tide.

Brighton Domain and local life

The playground at Brighton Domain has larger swings, a taller climbing frame, a group spinner swing and the original large slide. These facilities may change, so check the current playground equipment before your visit.

Brighton Domain is also the setting for the Brighton Gala, held every year in January. If you would like to plan your trip around the gala, check the dates for the relevant year. The Brighton Surf Life Saving Club has been in existence since its founding in 1937. The Brighton Store, opposite Brighton Beach, is a traditional stop for ice cream.

Additions in the wider destination of Dunedin City

The wider destination of Dunedin City offers other, separate outings and sightseeing options; these are not features of Brighton. The Tunnel Beach Walk is a short walk on Dunedin’s south coast that leads to a historic tunnel and a secluded beach. Sandymount offers a different landscape loop: it passes Lovers Leap and the Chasm and includes a lookout. This gives you a choice of different types of walks in Dunedin City—a short walk to a tunnel and beach, or a loop with a lookout and two named stops.

For a museum visit, Toitū Otago Settlers Museum offers 14 thematic galleries with interactive exhibits. They trace the history of the region’s people, from the earliest settlers to the most recent arrivals. Tūhura Otago Museum has more than 1.5 million objects from the natural world, culture and science. Its seven free galleries include a depiction of an early southern Māori coastal village and articulated moa skeletons. These museums offer a different focus from Brighton’s coastal walks and can help you decide which interests to include in your stay in the wider Dunedin City area.
