Whangārei District offers plenty of reasons to stay: waterfall loop walks, riverside trails, coastal scenery and museums. Options range from a three-hour loop walk to a full-day hike; in Whangārei, you’ll also find art, history and a Saturday morning market held year-round. You can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.

Waterfalls, forest and trails

At Otuihau – Whangārei Falls, a walking track loops around a 26-metre-high waterfall. Along the route are viewpoints, picnic areas and a wheelchair-accessible viewing platform. In A H Reed Memorial Park, a canopy walkway passes through 500-year-old living kauri trees; a side trip leads to the 23-metre-high Pukenui Falls. Bream Head is a coastal forest reserve and a refuge for rare plants and animals, including kiwi. In Coronation Scenic Reserve, you can see the remains of two Māori pā sites.

Whangārei has about 50 kilometres of shared paths for cyclists, connecting Raumanga, the city, the Hātea Loop, Onerahi, Te Kamo and Tikipunga. The 6.5-kilometre Onerahi Shared Path connects the city centre, Town Basin and the Hātea Loop with Onerahi and the Waimāhanga trail network. A 4.2-kilometre shared loop follows the Hātea River, crosses three bridges and passes several attractions. A trail runs through native forest and farmland between Otuihau – Whangārei Falls and Town Basin. A bike park adds an 800-metre loop, a beginner bike-skills course and a pump track to the trail network.

Hiking and coast

The Te Whara Track follows an ancient Māori path between Urquharts Bay and Ocean Beach. The 7.5-kilometre route is described as a full-day hike; five to six hours is given for one way. The Peach Cove Track is a three-hour loop walk that descends to a sandy beach at Peach Cove. Terrain and conditions can change seasonally, so check the latest notices before setting out. The Whangaruru North Head Walking Tracks start at Puriri Bay Campsite and pass through native forest and over ridgelines to remote coves. The Waipū Coastal Walkway features pancake limestone rock formations, native coastal bush, fishing spots and picnic areas.

The time estimates for the Te Whara Track and Peach Cove Track describe different walks: the five to six hours for the Te Whara Track is one way, while the three hours for the Peach Cove Track is for the loop walk. For a drive along the harbour, the scenic Whangārei Heads Road runs through bays to the Pacific coast. Tūtūkākā Marina is a fishing harbour with charter boats for diving and fishing.
