Kaiwaka as a stopover

Kaiwaka is on State Highway 1 and is known as a stopover roughly halfway between Auckland and Whangārei. For a multi-stage journey, Kaiwaka’s location on State Highway 1 offers a useful starting point when choosing where to stay. Footbridges, parks, cafés and distinctive architecture add to the town’s appeal beyond its highway location.

Getting around town on foot

Kaiwaka’s footbridges run alongside State Highway 1 and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the river. They make it possible to walk safely between shops, parks and cafés, while also improving connections within the town. The northern footbridge provides easy access from Kaiwaka town centre to McClean Park. If you would also like to explore a town on foot during your trip, this connection offers a practical point to consider when planning.

Parks and their history

McClean Park serves as a place for passing motorists to stop and rest. The park is linked to a 1947 donation: Archie and Bessie McClean gave a parcel of land to the Kaiwaka community. The park is also known by the spelling McLean Park and offers scenic walking paths.

Hubert Linnell Reserve has a paved car park with designated spaces for boat trailers. Upgrades completed in December 2024 aimed to improve access to Kaipara Harbour for everyone. As the park’s condition, access and facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Cafés and local offerings

La Nonna Italian Bakery serves fresh pastries and coffee; at Kaiwaka Cheese Shop, you can buy specialty cheeses for a picnic. Eutopia Café combines good food and organic coffee with a whimsical, creative atmosphere. Its handcrafted architecture features mosaic walls, imaginative sculptures and intricate woodwork. Local attractions range from pastries and coffee to cheese for a picnic and a café visit where the design also catches the eye. Offerings may change; check current opening hours before planning a specific visit.
