At Papaitonga Scenic Reserve, a short, easy track loops around a dune lake. The circuit offers views and opportunities for birdwatching. Track conditions can change; check them before your visit. The reserve is also an important refuge for birds that depend on wetlands or lowland forests. The landscape and birdlife together shape the nature experience here.

Wetlands, forest and birdlife

Waiopehu Scenic Reserve also combines native forest with well-maintained walking tracks, birdlife and views of the Tararua Ranges. Follow local signs about pest control. Muaƫpoko Park offers views of Lake Horowhenua (Punahau), as well as a playground. The two places offer different experiences: one focuses on forest tracks and views of the Tararua Ranges, while the other centres on the lake and play area.

Near Foxton Beach, the ManawatĆ« River Estuary is a UNESCO-protected international wetland. It is known for its birdlife and migratory shorebirds; 95 bird species have been recorded there. This area adds a distinctive focus on wetlands and migratory birds to the district’s natural attractions.
