Lake Tekapo: Lake, Stargazing and Regional History
Accommodation in Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo is a highland lake and a settlement at an elevation of 710 metres. A vast basin of golden tussock grass surrounds the town.
The Lake and Getting There
State Highway 8 runs directly through the settlement of Tekapo on the lakeshore. Daily shuttle buses run between Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and Queenstown. Check the timetable before your trip if you plan to use the shuttle to get there.
The Church and Regional History
The Church of the Good Shepherd stands on the lakeshore and was built as a memorial to the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country. It opened in 1935 in the wider Mackenzie District destination. It was the first church built in the Mackenzie Basin and is classified as a Category 1 Historic Place. Its dedication, opening year and status give the church a clear connection to regional history.
Thermal Pools and Stargazing
Tekapo Springs has three thermal pools and an aqua play area with two cooler pools. Tekapo Star Gazing departs from Tekapo Springs and combines guided stargazing with use of the thermal pools. Operating days and availability may change, so check the latest tour details in advance.
All Dark Sky Project tours depart from the base at 1 Motuariki Lane, Takapō (Lake Tekapo); departure arrangements may change. The Summit Experience takes visitors to the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory at the summit of Mount John in Lake Takapō. It offers guided stargazing with powerful telescopes, including a 16-inch telescope. Availability and facilities may also change, so check the latest tour information before making plans.
Trails in Lake Tekapo Regional Park
Lake Tekapo Regional Park has 24 kilometres of cycling and walking trails, as well as orienteering courses and swimming spots. This offers a range of ways to spend time outdoors: cycling and walking routes sit alongside orienteering options and designated swimming spots.
Cycling Route in the Mackenzie District
In the wider Mackenzie District destination, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail passes through Twizel and is divided into nine sections. An alternative route from Takapō (Lake Tekapo) to Twizel crosses the Pūkaki Flats before reaching Twizel. This distinguishes the local choice of cycling and walking trails in Lake Tekapo Regional Park from the segmented cycling route in the wider Mackenzie District. The loop trail around Twizel is also accessible year-round. The Twizel River Trail has picnic areas and swimming spots along the river. Lake Ruataniwha in the Mackenzie District is used for sailing, canoeing and windsurfing; its shallow water also makes it a family favourite for swimming and relaxing.
