Glenavy is on the north bank of the Waitaki River, near where the river meets the sea. The town combines its connection to the river with opportunities for fishing, walking and cycling. Two features can help with trip planning: the Glenavy Track, a flat route about 1.2 kilometres long, and the Waitaki River, where salmon and trout are caught. Whitebaiting is also associated with Glenavy and the river mouth. This brings together a geographical connection to the river and a specific route through a landscape of streams and pine trees.

Fishing on the Waitaki River

Glenavy is a good base for anglers. Both salmon and trout are caught on the Waitaki River near its mouth. Whitebaiting is also associated with Glenavy and the mouth of the Waitaki River. This gives you different fishing interests to consider when planning: catching salmon or trout on the one hand, and whitebaiting on the other. Near Glenavy, the Waitaki Riparian Enhancement Society operates a salmon hatchery; volunteers are restocking the river with fish. This work adds a connection to fish restocking to the picture of the river.

The Glenavy Track

The Glenavy Track is used for walking and cycling. It is flat and about 1.2 kilometres long; it follows a stream under a small pine plantation and near State Highway One. In Glenavy, you can start on Ruane Street. The track is also suitable for people with a low level of fitness. Its length, flat route and fitness requirements give you different points to consider when deciding whether it suits your planned activity. Picnic areas are located by the stream and at the car park at the end near the bridge; toilets and several picnic benches are also available. When planning a break, you can choose between the area by the stream and the car park.

Glenavy Recreation Reserve

Glenavy Recreation Reserve is also relevant to local recreation planning. A Waimate District Council notice dated 7 December 2023 reported that the first phase of the redevelopment had been completed. This included restoring walking tracks and creating a new bike park. The two outdoor options have different focuses: the Glenavy Track is defined by its route and approximate length, while the first phase at the Recreation Reserve included restored tracks and the bike park.
