Diamond Harbour: Coast, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Diamond Harbour
Diamond Harbour lies on the southern side of Lyttelton Harbour. Bays, coastal trails and the connection across the water shape the area, while Stoddart Cottage adds a distinctive cultural touch. When planning your trip, itâs worth considering the landscape and different routes, as well as the Cottageâs opening hours and the ferry crossing.
Bays and landscapes around the harbour
Diamond Harbour includes several distinctive bays: Charteris Bay, Hays Bay, Church Bay and Pƫrau Bay. The immediate shoreline alternates between flat terrain and deep gullies covered with exotic flowering plants and trees. As a result, different landscapes meet along the coast, rather than the area being limited to a single stretch of beach.
Nearby, Mount Herbert/Te Ahu PÄtiki rises to 920 metres. The highest peak on the Banks Peninsula, it offers views of the peninsula and the Canterbury Plains. The mountain is a destination in the Diamond Harbour area, not part of the townâs shoreline.
Coastal trails and walking options
The Mount Herbert Walkway/Te Ahu PÄtiki starts at the wharf at Te Waipapa/Diamond Harbour. A rugged section of the track climbs directly from the beach and follows a streambed through pine forest and regenerating bush. The route combines shoreline, ascent and vegetated terrain. Diamond Harbour also offers opportunities for walking, cycling, boating, fishing and swimming.
The Coastal Cliff Walkway connects Purau Bay, Diamond Harbour/Te Waipapa and Church Bay. Its total length is approximately 7.5 kilometres. The Cliff Edge Track is a separate route: it runs from the area below the bowling club in Stoddart Point Reserve to Church Bay. The Coastal Route also starts in the area below the bowling club, but continues to the Purau Bay end of Stoddart Point Reserve. It is a little rougher than the Cliff Edge Track and offers views across the Purau shoreline and of Ripapa Island.
Stoddart Cottage: art and history
Stoddart Cottage is the oldest colonial dwelling in Diamond Harbour and the birthplace of painter Margaret Stoddart. A new art exhibition is installed in the main gallery each month. The Artisan Shop displays locally handcrafted items. The Cottage is open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm, and on most public holidays; visits at other times can be arranged by appointment. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Beach, wharf and ferry crossing
Diamond Harbour Beach is a small stretch of rocky coastline with a swimming beach in front of Morganâs Gully. The beach can be used for swimming at high tide. It also provides access to the local wharf and ferry terminal. Stoddart Point Reserve has a picnic area that is popular with day-trippers.
The Diamond Harbour Ferry connects Lyttelton Port and Diamond Harbour across WhakaraupĆ/Lyttelton Harbour. The scenic crossing from Lyttelton to Diamond Harbour takes ten minutes. Service details may change, so check crossing information before travelling. This makes it easy to plan your harbour crossing alongside time for coastal trails, the beach or the Cottage.
