The Whangaparāoa Path connects Whangaparaoa town centre to Stanmore Bay Beach via the Rata Road walkway. When choosing a hotel in Whangaparaoa, it may help to first consider whether walks to the beach, play areas or excursions on the peninsula will shape your stay.

Walking between the town centre and Stanmore Bay Beach

The Whangaparāoa Path is mostly paved and can be walked with a pushchair. However, there is a fairly steep section between the town centre and Rata Road Reserve. Both points are worth considering when planning: the general description of the path as pushchair-friendly does not rule out this steeper section.

The Rata Road walkway crosses several bridges and passes wetlands and a large pond. So, as well as connecting the town centre and the beach, the route offers scenic views along the way.

Around the start and end of the school day, the Whangaparāoa Path is heavily used by students from Whangaparaoa College. The times may change with school schedules. If the timing of your walk matters, take this daily rhythm into account when planning.

Public toilets are available at the library and Stanmore Bay Beach. Before your visit, check whether the facilities are available if you rely on them.

Play areas in Stanmore Bay

The beach playground at Stanmore Bay has a flying fox, a large climbing net, a log rope swing and a separate toddler area. The playground therefore offers a range of specific play options, including a dedicated area for toddlers.

The Whangaparāoa Path also passes through Stanmore Bay Park. There is a beach volleyball court and a small playground for toddlers there. If you want to include play areas in your plans for the day, you can distinguish between the beach playground and the facilities in the park.

Scenery and activities on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula

Nearby, at the end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, is Shakespear Regional Park. Its landscape includes regenerating native forest, cliffs, sheltered bays and wetlands. There are also historic sites and a lookout.

The park has walking tracks and offers opportunities to hike, swim, kayak and fish. The walking tracks cross farmland and native bush, leading to 360-degree views of the Hauraki Gulf. This makes it possible to combine different activities in the park with a distinctive landscape experience.

Planning a ferry trip and activities on the water

Nearby, ferries run once a day from Gulf Harbour to Tiritiri Matangi. Check current departure times before planning your trip.

Along the coast of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, you can paddle a SUP or take a windsurfing lesson with Flying Forwards. As the specific windsurfing lesson on offer may change, check in advance if you plan to include this activity in your itinerary.
