When planning a trip to Kadavu, Kadavu Village and the wider travel area are different points of reference. The road information relates to Kadavu Village, while reef, kayaking and cultural topics relate to the wider area or Kadavu Province. If you are looking for a hotel in Kadavu, it is worth considering your preferred activities and how you will get there together.

Getting There and Road Conditions

There are regular flights and ferry services to and from the mainland for Kadavu. Check the current flight and ferry schedules before your trip. In July 2017, the road from Vunisea extended only as far as Vunisei District School; Kadavu Village and other named villages then relied on fiberglass boats. In September 2023, the access road built for Kadavu Village was passable only in favorable weather, as the pilot sections had not yet been gravelled. These road conditions relate to their respective dates. Also check current road and boat connections before setting out.

Islands, Reef and Seabirds

In the broader travel destination of Kadavu Province, Kadavu is an archipelago comprising the islands of Ono, Buliya, Yaukuve and others; many are uninhabited. The Great Astrolabe Reef in the Kadavu island group is considered one of the largest and healthiest coral reefs in the world. This extensive reef system is rich in pelagic and reef fish, lies close to shore and is easily accessible to divers and snorkelers. In Kadavu Province, the reef protects the islands. North of Ono Island lies the uninhabited island of Yabu, locally known as “Birdland” because of the many seabird species that breed there. Thus, the wider travel area offers two distinct natural features to consider: the reef and its fish life, and a seabird breeding ground. Pelagic fish live in open water; reef fish are associated with the reef.

Kayaking Tours and Cultural Activities

In the wider region, multi-day kayaking tours follow Kadavu’s rugged coastline and connect several resorts. The kayaking tours therefore focus on the coast, while diving and snorkeling are the main activities at the Great Astrolabe Reef. These different themes can help you decide which interests to prioritize on your trip.
