The Conch Bar Caves area on Middle Caicos includes an above-ground area with rare plant and animal populations, as well as a karst cave system with specialized cave flora and fauna. Species in the cave system include bats, crustaceans and woodlice. The landscape around the caves is also part of the picture: Village Hill and several nearby ponds lie within the cave area.

Conch Bar Caves and Indian Cave

Conch Bar Caves are of interest not only for their natural features. Their human history spans from pre-Columbian times through the more recent colonial era. For travelers interested in history, this long time span broadens the picture of the site beyond its cave system and wildlife.

Indian Cave offers further natural features. Large blue land crabs live in the cave's soft, damp soil. Barn owls, bats, Cuban crows, yellow-crowned night herons and smooth-billed anis are often found in the surrounding area. The birds and bats mentioned are often found around the cave, but individual sightings cannot be expected on any particular visit.

Mudjin Harbour: Beach, Cliffs and Dragon Cay

The main access to Mudjin Harbour Beach is through Dragon Cay Resort. There is a small parking area and a 150 m concrete path leading down to the beach. Above the beach is a large, open cave, and there is a viewpoint at the top of the cliff. The rocky Dragon Cay is one of the defining features of the beach access area. Check access details before your visit, as they may change.

The nearby barrier reef also offers a way to experience the coastal landscape from the water: snorkeling is possible there. However, sea conditions are often too rough and can vary. Keep this caveat in mind when planning your day.

A February event at Bambarra Beach

Every February, the Valentine's Day Cup model sailboat race takes place at Bambarra Beach on Middle Caicos. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the latest event information and dates in advance.

The bigger picture: the Turks and Caicos Islands

Beyond Middle Caicos, the Turks and Caicos Islands form an archipelago of eight main islands and more than 40 cays; the figures may vary depending on how they are counted. The island group's marine landscape includes an extensive barrier reef and impressive underwater walls.

Boat trips in the Turks and Caicos Islands visit uninhabited cays, beaches and reefs. Some uninhabited islands are attractions because of their secluded beaches and sandbank systems, snorkeling opportunities, wildlife and historic sites.
