Porto Alegre: History and Orientation

Porto Alegre lies at the southern terminus of the main road that runs along the eastern side of the island of São Tomé. This provides a clear geographical reference point for finding your way around the island. The town can also be understood through its historic plantation and activities on the Malanza River.

The Porto Alegre plantation was the second-largest estate in the south of the island. It was founded by Jacinto Carneiro de Sousa e Almeida, Viscount of Malanza and son of the Baron of Água Izé. The plantation included six outbuildings, including Ilhéu das Rolas. The surrounding area of Porto Alegre also contains the ruins of former cocoa and coffee plantations. They add further former plantation sites to the history of the estate.

The equator monument on Ilhéu das Rolas was erected in 1936 by navigator Gago Coutinho. Its polychrome base depicts a planisphere, a flat representation of the world. Ilhéu das Rolas was one of the plantation’s outbuildings; the monument provides a distinct historical connection to the equator.

Canoe Trip and Wildlife Watching

From September to December, whales pass along the south coast. On organised excursions, you can watch them from Porto Alegre or Ilhéu das Rolas. Check the current availability of these excursions locally.

Jalé Beach is near Porto Alegre and in the buffer zone of the Obô Natural Park on the island of São Tomé. It is the island’s most important nesting beach for green turtles and leatherback turtles; several occurrences of hawksbill turtles have also been recorded there. Jalé is also a destination for guided sea turtle watching tours. The nesting season runs from September to April. The presence of the animals and nesting activity may vary.

Travel Season and Excursion Highlights

The time windows for whale and turtle watching partly overlap: from September to December, whale watching coincides with the nesting season at Jalé, which lasts until April. September to December therefore falls within both periods; the stated nesting season extends beyond this period. The two-hour canoe trip complements the seasonal wildlife watching with an activity that has a specific duration and starting point in town.

The locations also differ: the canoe trip starts in Porto Alegre, organised whale watching is possible from Porto Alegre or Ilhéu das Rolas, and guided turtle watching tours are based at Jalé near Porto Alegre. This allows you to distinguish between the river trip and wildlife watching by starting point and observation location when planning. Before travelling, confirm the local arrangements for the canoe trip and the current availability of organised whale and turtle excursions.
