In Jáltipan de Morelos, Son Jarocho, the Feria Folclórica, and religious feast days shape the cultural calendar. Events are spread across several months: the Feria takes place in May, while other celebrations fall between February and December. If you want a particular event to determine your travel dates, it’s best to check its date and program for that year in advance.

Cultural History and Son Jarocho

The Centro de Documentación del Son Jarocho is dedicated to researching, preserving, and sharing the cultural history of southern Veracruz. Its educational offerings include jarana, marimba, and singing, alongside zapateado and weaving garments on a backstrap loom. Its cultural focus thus ranges from music and dance to textile crafts.

Since 1994, the center has organized the Festival de Son Jarocho y otras Músicas. It is also the venue for the Festival del Son Jarocho de Jáltipan. For specific festival visits or workshops, check current programs, dates, and the venue in advance.

The Danza de la Malinche is also part of Jáltipan’s folk culture. Jaranero musicians and a drum accompany the dance; specific performances are seasonal or tied to events. This dance tradition complements the documentation center’s focus with its own connection to music and performance.

Feria Folclórica: Culture, History, and Food

The Feria Folclórica de Jáltipan is dedicated to preserving local culture and history and renewing recognition of the city’s Nahua origins. It has been held every year in May since 1979. Its program includes exhibitions on local history, customs, and handicrafts, as well as local trades and businesses. May thus offers a fixed seasonal reference point for travelers interested in this cultural event.

Traditional foods are also part of the Feria: the stalls offer, among other things, popo, a drink considered sacred by the Nahua. A sugarcane press makes sugarcane juice for visitors during the festival. These food offerings are specific to the Feria and are not available as daily refreshments.

Feast Days from February to December

Other recurring events take place throughout the year. On February 2, Jáltipan celebrates the traditional feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria. On August 30, Santa Rosa de Lima is part of the local celebrations, which include dances. These dates offer a different focus from the Feria in May and help you plan your stay around the event you want to attend.

The Día de Muertos celebrations on November 1 and 2 include activities at and in front of the municipal cemetery. Jaranero musicians and guitarists perform, and traditional foods are also part of the celebrations. On November 20, a commemorative mass for the Mexican Revolution is held in the park in Colonia Agraria. These are two different November events: one combines music and food with the celebrations, while the other is dedicated to remembrance.

The feast of the Virgen de Guadalupe is celebrated from December 10 to 14. It is accompanied by horse races, a ring-jousting tournament, and sporting events. Those comparing religious feast days with other occasions will therefore find a different event profile in December than in November or during the Feria in May.

Los Siete Pozos and the Vegetation

Los Siete Pozos are communal wells in the lower-lying areas of Jáltipan. Lush vegetation grows around them, including fragrant white Palmón blossoms. This aspect of the landscape offers a different focus from cultural events and festivals tied to specific dates: here, the wells and their surroundings take center stage. When choosing a time to travel, you can therefore consider both the festival dates and your interest in this local landscape.
