Nuevo Laredo: Museums, Literature and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Nuevo Laredo
Nuevo Laredo lies on the banks of the Río Bravo. For planning your trip, natural history, literature and fine arts offer a variety of cultural themes. There is also regional cuisine influenced by northeastern Mexico and, in particular, the state of Nuevo León. Museums, events and culinary traditions give you specific ways to tailor your stay to your interests.
Museums and Fine Arts
At the Museo de Historia Natural, a permanent exhibition spans prehistory to the present day. Replicas of dinosaur skeletons are also on display. You can explore the broad sweep of history and the dinosaur skeleton replicas as a specific natural history theme.
The Museo Reyes Meza has an 800 m² exhibition area for painting, sculpture and photography. It is considered a pioneering venue for modern art and cultural outreach in northeastern Mexico. The Centro Cultural Nuevo Laredo houses museums, theaters and galleries featuring contemporary and historical art. The institutions therefore differ in their focus: natural history, modern art, and a cultural center with several art and performing arts formats.
Literature and Events
The Estación Palabra Gabriel García Márquez is dedicated to the writer and promotes literature in Nuevo Laredo. The venue has an auditorium for book presentations, conferences and literary gatherings. Its program includes literary discussions, reading sessions, puppet theater, conferences, literary and musical recitals, as well as painting and sculpture exhibitions. If you want to plan your stay around a particular reading, conference or exhibition, check the announced dates.
Regional Cuisine
Local cuisine is similar to that of northeastern Mexico and is strongly influenced by the state of Nuevo León. Common dishes include flour tortillas, dried beef with egg, and dishes prepared in a dried beef sauce. Meat dishes are also prepared in different ways: goat meat is grilled, cooked al pastor style or fried. Pork roast is braised with garlic, cumin and ancho chili.
You can discover a range of regional dishes and how they are prepared, from flour tortillas and beef to goat and pork.
Fair and Handicrafts
A fair for industry, agriculture, commerce and livestock has been held in the first half of September since 1957. A queen is elected to lead the celebrations. If you want to plan your trip around the fair, check the dates for your chosen year.
Nuevo Laredo's handicraft scene includes workshops for glassblowing and blacksmithing. They make curiosities that are sold to US tourists. Glassblowing and blacksmithing represent different craft techniques and add another dimension of local cultural life to the museums and event venues.
