Puerto Peñasco lies between desert and sea. The experiences described have their own conditions—some depend on low tide, and one dune trail is closed in summer. This guide can help you plan your trip around your interests and the relevant time windows.

Landscape and Visitor Centers

The El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve stretches across the municipalities of Puerto Peñasco, Plutarco Elías Calles, and San Luis Río Colorado in the state of Sonora. The reserve’s Schuk Toak Visitor Center and Museum, in the municipality of Puerto Peñasco, provides information about biodiversity, geology, and culture. Access options may change seasonally; check the conditions before your visit.

A 5-kilometer round-trip dune trail leads from the Visitor Center and Museum. It is closed during the summer months because of high temperatures. The Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO) is in the Las Conchas community, southeast of the town center. The CEDO Visitor Center in Puerto Peñasco features a 55-foot-long fin whale skeleton and an exhibit about fishing. On the CEDO grounds, ponds provide a refuge for two Rio Sonoyta fish: the Longfin Dace and the Desert Pupfish.

Beaches and Water Experiences

Hermosa, Bonita, El Mirador, and Playa de Oro beaches are considered suitable for windsurfing and snorkeling because of their moderate waves. At Bahía La Choya, low tide reveals small natural tide pools where visitors can explore marine life. The bay’s calm waters are suitable for kayaking. The distinction matters when choosing between these activities: tide levels determine access to the pools, while calm water is the feature described for kayaking.

Whale watching in Puerto Peñasco has been authorized by SEMARNAT under Mexican standard NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010; seasonal availability varies. Check availability before your trip.

Golf, Festivals, and Regional Cuisine

Puerto Peñasco has three golf courses, two of which were designed by Jack Nicklaus. Local festivals mentioned include the Festival Cultural del Desierto in February and the Fiesta del Camarón in September. At the oyster farms in Estero Morúa near Puerto Peñasco, visitors can sample oysters freshly harvested from the sea. Also in the destination’s vicinity, Ostionera El Barco has a restaurant serving seafood and freshly harvested oysters. The dunes around Ostionera El Barco are used for sandboarding.

A 2025-published account describes Hotel La Roca as the oldest lodging in Puerto Peñasco and says it is located in the heart of the port.

Tours and Their Conditions

A 2019 CEDO brochure presented a full-day, community-organized tour to San Jorge Island as part of the NaturArte eco-adventures. NaturArte also offered a half-day, community-organized oyster-farming experience. A half-day Estero excursion included light birdwatching and a nature walk; the half-day Estero kayaking tour took place only at the highest tide.

Earlier offerings also included a full-day dune excursion with a moderately challenging hike through the sand. A two-hour exploration of tide pools near CEDO was possible only at low tide. There was also a half-day, community-organized mining tour in Bahía San Jorge. The time and tide details point to different ways of planning, from a short visit during a low-tide window to full-day tours. If you would like to plan a tour like this, check current availability in advance.
