Discover Mocorito
Accommodation in Mocorito
Mocorito showcases its cultural side through historic buildings, public art and the “Viernes de Plaza” fair. Two levels are useful when planning your trip: the town center, with its named squares and cultural sites, and the wider municipality, which also includes El Valle. This helps distinguish the town’s attractions from regional traditions.
Historic Buildings and Squares
The Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción is in the heart of Mocorito’s historic center. It may be the former Jesuit mission of San Miguel Arcángel, completed in 1594. This historical attribution remains a possibility.
The Casa de la Cultura in Mocorito features traditional 19th-century architecture. Its mural, “Mocorito a través de los siglos,” by Alonso Enríquez, covers the interior walls in their entirety. The Museo de Historia Regional preserves paleontological and archaeological remains from the region, including mammoth bones, stone tools and clay objects.
Bronze sculptures of Eustaquio Buelna, Rafael Buelna Tenorio and Agustina Ramírez stand in the Plaza Cívica de los 3 Grandes de Mocorito. The Casa de las Diligencias is a house built in the late 19th century. On the Camino Real, it served as an arrival point and stop for stagecoaches. The history of Plazuela Miguel Hidalgo includes its former use as a cemetery and its beginnings as an arms square. A tourist photo spot featuring Mocorito lettering is located in Plazuela Municipal Miguel Hidalgo.
Fridays in the Square
The “Viernes de Plaza” fair takes place every Friday in Plazuela Miguel Hidalgo. It is for residents of the town center as well as people from nearby towns and rancherías.
The program includes lottery games, handicrafts, traditional sweets, ice cream and traditional pastries from Mocorito. There are also food stalls with seating, street performances by students and the release of Cantoya balloons. Music groups or bands perform Sinaloan music at the kiosk in the square. If you would like to factor this event into your plans, schedule your visit for a Friday and check the date before you travel.
El Valle and the Wider Municipality
El Valle is outside the town center and belongs to the municipality of Mocorito. Mills in the Sindicatura of El Valle have produced sugarcane sweets for around 200 years. Clay vessels, baskets and palm-leaf fans are also made there. These traditions add a distinct regional focus to the cultural sites in the town center.
The municipality of Mocorito is in the northwest of the state of Sinaloa. At the municipal level, three climate regions can be distinguished: tropical savanna in the west, mountainous terrain in the east and a transition zone in the central area.
The wider region also includes La Alameda, a 27-hectare nature reserve on the left bank of the Río Mocorito. It has walking trails, palapas, playgrounds, sports courts, skating ramps, a tree nursery, a climbing wall and a zip line over the river. Check the current availability of the individual facilities before visiting.
