Choix brings together a historic center, churches, museums and cultural offerings. These places offer different perspectives: the town’s history dates back to the Jesuit mission of 1607; collections explore local craftsmanship and the history of the Municipality of Choix, alongside memorabilia from actor and singer JosĂ© Ángel Espinoza AragĂłn, known as “Ferrusquilla.” There are also art workshops, an observation tower and riverside recreation. You can tailor your stay to whether you are primarily interested in local history, collections, or a mix of culture and leisure.

History and Church Architecture

The historic center of Choix was founded in 1607 by a Jesuit mission led by Padre Don Cristóbal de Villalta. The date and named leader provide a specific starting point for the town’s history. The Templo de San Ignacio de Loyola dates from the early 17th century and originated as the former Mission of San Ignacio de Choix. It was restored in the 19th century. Its origins and restoration mark two distinct phases: the first points to the church’s beginnings as a mission, while the second reflects a later change to the church.

Today, the Church of San Ignacio de Choix has a single-nave layout and a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross. A single-nave layout refers to a church interior with one main nave; a Latin-cross floor plan describes the shape of the building’s layout. Visitors interested in architecture can distinguish two aspects: the temple’s historical development and its spatial form. Both offer insight into the church building beyond its founding date.

Crafts and Memorabilia at the Museo Reloj Mirador

The Museo Reloj Mirador brings together a range of cultural themes. The exhibition includes ceramic, wood, leather and palm crafts made by artisans from the Municipality of Choix. These materials highlight the breadth of local craftsmanship and offer more than one type of material to explore. The museum also displays photographs, trophies and other memorabilia belonging to actor and singer JosĂ© Ángel Espinoza AragĂłn, known as “Ferrusquilla,” who was born in Choix. The crafts and personal memorabilia sit side by side but tell different stories: one collection focuses on handcrafted objects, while the other preserves memories of a person from Choix. If you want to explore culture beyond buildings, the museum offers another facet of the town.

The view is also part of the Museo Reloj Mirador experience. From its approximately 17-meter-high, five-story tower, which has an observation vestibule, visitors can look out over the area around Choix. The height is approximate. Check whether the tower is currently accessible before your visit.

Museums, History and Art Workshops

The Casa de la Cultura offers a different focus. Its small museum displays objects and exhibits related to the history of the Municipality of Choix, including the fossilized vertebra of a prehistoric animal. This vertebra is an unusual individual item within a broader historical theme, and differs from the craft objects at the Museo Reloj Mirador. The Casa de la Cultura also offers various art workshops. It thus combines an exploration of history with a practical artistic activity; check in advance for suitable dates.

The Casa Museo Avelina Uzarraga displays a private collection of regional photographs, antiques and other unusual objects. The two venues can be distinguished by their respective focuses: the Casa de la Cultura dedicates its small museum to the history of the Municipality of Choix, while the Casa Museo centers on a private collection of regional photographs and a variety of collected items. When choosing cultural sites for your trip, you can consider whether you are more interested in local history or in photographs and a range of objects.

Riverside Recreation

For a change of pace from churches and collections, Parque Lineal El Vado offers family-friendly recreation by the river. This adds a different kind of leisure to Choix’s cultural offerings, with riverside relaxation at its heart. The park complements the churches, exhibitions and art workshops described here with a focus of its own. You can plan your trip according to whether you want to spend more time on history and collections or also make time for outdoor recreation.
