San Luis Potosí combines a historic city center with museums, a long pedestrian route and an expansive park. If you’re looking for a hotel in San Luis Potosí, you can start planning your trip by asking what interests you most: the city’s history and architecture, its collections and events, or a large green space. The city’s places and themes offer different points of reference for your plans.

City history and historic routes

San Luis Potosí was founded in 1592 in the historic center and developed into one of the most important mining towns in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The city was also an important point along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. This historic route connected the Altiplano Potosino, the Bajío and northern New Spain. The city’s founding history and its role in a broader regional context are therefore closely linked.

An annual event is the Procession of Silence. It draws more than 150,000 visitors each year. More than 2,000 members of over 30 penitential brotherhoods cover around 3.5 kilometers through the historic center.

Architecture and collections

The cathedral in the historic center has a two-tiered Baroque facade with Solomonic columns. Its oldest tower has three richly decorated levels. On November 16, 1935, the building was declared a National Monument. Its architectural details and historical context offer two different perspectives on the same building.

The Museo Regional Potosino houses one of the Huasteca’s most important archaeological collections, as well as a significant collection of paintings from the viceregal period. The visitor area also features the founding document of San Luis Potosí in an exhibition about the city’s origins. The Capilla de Aranzazú is also part of the museum’s history: this Baroque building, with its furnishings and covered atrium, is considered a unique architectural testament in the Americas. The museum thus brings collections, a historic document and a distinctive architectural form into focus in different areas.

Exhibitions, events and city landmarks

The MUNI, Museo Universitario, hosts temporary and permanent exhibitions of photography, painting and sculpture. Events held there include astronomy nights, workshops and picnics under the stars. If you’d like to plan around a specific event, check the dates before your trip.

The Panteón del Saucito, also known as the Museo de Arte Funerario, is the oldest and largest cemetery in the capital city of San Luis Potosí. Its name points to a funerary perspective, while its identity is also shaped by its role as a cemetery. It adds another aspect of the city’s history to its museums and buildings.

Green spaces and pedestrian routes

Parque Tangamanga I is located in the west of San Luis Potosí and covers 420 hectares. This wooded area has two lakes, and its trees were planted starting in the mid-1980s. The main building of the former Hacienda de la Tenería, whose history dates back to 1609, has also been preserved within the park. The park thus combines a large expanse of landscape with a historic building whose history began long before the trees were planted.

For a different perspective on the city, consider the Ruta Peatonal Calzada de Guadalupe: it is a tree-lined pedestrian corridor more than two kilometers long that ends at the small basilica. Unlike the expansive park, it is described as a route with a named endpoint. This can help you distinguish between a large green space and a clearly defined city corridor when planning your trip.
