Pozos: Procession, Churches and Local History
Accommodation in Pozos
Pozos can be explored through its religious traditions and local history. The Procesión de los Cristos shapes the town’s cultural identity; notable sights include the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís and Jardín Hidalgo. Work and business trips to the municipality are also reasons to stay. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether your trip is cultural or work-related.
Tradition and Religious Life
The Procesión de los Cristos dates back to the 19th century and has been held for more than 120 years. For the residents of Villa de Pozos, it is a symbol of their identity. Families preserve the Christ images as a legacy passed down from one generation to the next. In this way, the tradition’s public character is linked to its transmission within families.
The procession is a walking procession accompanied by candles, banners, and music. At the 2025 celebration, families carried more than 400 Cristos from the four cuarteles of Villa de Pozos along the main streets of the municipal seat. A municipal statement from 2026 reports that hundreds of families and more than 600 Christ images take part in the annual procession.
On August 10, 2026, the municipal council unanimously recognized the procession as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality and supported the application for its recognition as intangible cultural heritage of the state. At that time, the state-level process was still underway. If you want to plan your stay around the procession, check the event date before booking.
Sights and Art
The Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís and Jardín Hidalgo are among the notable sights of Villa de Pozos. A 2024 inventory entry lists the works “Medallon de San Bartomé” and “la Virgen de la Merced y San Pedro Nolasco” as part of the parish’s art collection. The works were moved to the UASLP for educational purposes for a limited period in 2024.
The traditional Iglesia del Panalillo is also among the municipality’s notable places for culture and history. In its 2026 promotion of crafts, the municipality also featured women artisans from Villa de Pozos and their papier-mâché pieces.
Local History
Villa de Pozos was founded in 1592 by Diego de Tapia as Real de San Francisco de los Pozos. The Procesión de los Cristos, which originated in the 19th century, belongs to a later period; the two dates mark different stages in the town’s history. A historic hacienda de beneficio in Villa de Pozos served the miners of Cerro de San Pedro, adding a connection to mining to this historical context.
Find a Hotel Based on Your Reason for Traveling
A municipal statement from July 2026 described Villa de Pozos as closely connected to major industrial parks in the region and linked this to the steady arrival of travelers for work, business, and investment. This connection depends on ongoing regional development. If you are traveling specifically for the procession, check the exact event date before setting your accommodation dates.
