When planning your trip around Los Puentes, it is worth exploring cultural and natural sites in the municipality of Tamuín and the surrounding area. The archaeological sites of Tamtoc and Tamohí, as well as the El Nacimiento nature area, are located in the municipality of Tamuín. They differ in their historical periods, historical remains, and landscapes: the archaeological sites are associated with river trade, while El Nacimiento is associated with the source of the Río Choy and shallow water.

Tamtoc and Tamohí: Two Historical Highlights

Tamtoc is located in the Huasteca Potosina and was an important center of river trade between 900 and 1100. Its features include pyramids, monoliths, stelae, murals, circular buildings, and stone sculptures such as the Venus of Tamtoc. The use of a calendar is also among the site's features. Thus, architectural forms sit alongside mural and stone art, while the calendar adds another historical dimension. If you are interested in archaeology, Tamtoc brings together architecture, artistic evidence, and trade history.

Tamohí, also known as El Consuelo, was an important Huastec center between 1100 and 1300. Its features included murals, fine work in shells and sea snails, pottery, goldwork, and sculptures such as El adolescente huasteco. Because of its location on the river, the center was part of significant river trade. Its range of features extends from shell and sea-snail work to pottery and goldwork, as well as a named sculpture; murals are also part of the site.

The platform at Tamohí contains the buildings that have been researched and consolidated since 1946 and currently represent the site. The platform covers approximately 8,000 m². The periods and areas of focus help when comparing the two sites: Tamtoc dates from 900 to 1100, while Tamohí dates from 1100 to 1300. Tamtoc combines trade history with architectural forms and calendars; Tamohí foregrounds craftsmanship, sculpture, and its importance as a Huastec center.

Spring Landscape and Karst Cave

El Nacimiento is a nature area in Tamuín with shallow water, making it suitable for an enjoyable visit with the whole family. Crystal-clear water emerges from a cave and forms the source of the Río Choy. The spring is surrounded by tropical vegetation and a turquoise landscape. Here, the specific setting of the river's source meets a family-friendly visit to shallow waters. This makes El Nacimiento thematically distinct from the archaeological sites of Tamtoc and Tamohí.

The Cueva en Taninul, a karst cave near the Taninul Hotel in the vicinity of Ciudad Valles, is also located in the surrounding area of Los Puentes. It adds a different geological feature to the area's natural attractions: while El Nacimiento is defined by its spring, river source, and shallow water, the Cueva is notable for its classification as a karst cave.
