El Hospital and the Festival of San Miguel Arcángel

El Hospital is located in the municipality of Charcas. In some communities in the municipality, including El Hospital, a Mass and festival in honor of San Miguel Arcángel are celebrated on September 29. If this date matters for your trip, check the specific festival dates in advance.

Several versions passed down through generations link the celebration to the deaths of people in events that took place after the Mexican War of Independence began in 1810 and before the Revolution of 1910. The stories thus connect the festival with a broad historical period without offering a single explanation.

Museums in Charcas

The Raíces de Mi Tierra Museum in the municipality of Charcas presents the landscapes, flora, and fauna of the Altiplano Potosino through murals, photographs, and objects. Its subjects also include aspects of mining and the way of life of the Huachichiles, including their weapons, food, and medicine. The museum also houses the Rafael Reyes Gómez Library. Guided visits are free; check the current arrangements before your visit.

A different focus awaits you at the “El Meteorito” Interactive Astronomy Museum, an educational, recreational, and science outreach center focused on astronomy. It has five permanent themed halls covering “Universe,” “Galaxies and the Milky Way,” “The Solar System and Planetary Systems,” “Earth,” “Meteorites,” and “Cabo Tuna.” All the halls are equipped with interactive devices that project different astronomy-related topics.

A half-hour film about the pre-Hispanic world and the development of astronomy is shown in the planetarium. The permanent halls cover several subject areas, while the film brings these two aspects together in a format of its own. In February 2026, students observed lunar craters through the observatory’s telescope.

Wixárika Culture in Charcas

In the wider destination of Charcas, the Wixárika pilgrimage route passes through the municipalities of Villa de Ramos, Charcas, Villa de Guadalupe, Matehuala, Villa de la Paz, and Catorce. The Huichol people call this area Wirikuta and, according to their beliefs, associate it with the origin of the world. The Ruta Histórico Cultural del Pueblo Wixárika passes through the municipalities of Villa de Ramos, Salinas, and Charcas. Cerro Las Narices is also part of this cultural context: it is a Wixárika ritual center along their sacred route.

Historical and Culinary Highlights

The Plaza de Armas in Charcas is lined with colonial buildings, including the town hall and old mansions that belonged to important figures in local history. The Centro Cultural is housed in the former main building of one of the region’s many ore-processing haciendas. The Ex Hacienda de la Góngora was one of four ore-processing haciendas in Charcas. These buildings also give the regional context an industrial and historical dimension.

Charcas’s culinary tradition includes Gorditas ferrocarrileras, whose origins are associated with the railway. In the municipality of Charcas, Mezcal Laguna Seca is also produced entirely by artisanal methods from wild Agave salmiana, at the Ex-Hacienda de Laguna Seca. In this way, the cultural connections extend from the celebration in El Hospital to Charcas’s museums, traditions, and history.
