When looking for a hotel in Ciénaga, you can plan your trip around the cultural and natural features of the municipality of Jalpan de Serra. These include mission architecture, archaeological history, Pame culture, crafts, and activities along the river and at the reservoir. The following highlights help organize the different sides of the municipality.

Missions and their imagery

The Misión de Jalpan was built by Fray Junípero Serra between 1751 and 1758 and dedicated to the Apostle Santiago. The lower part of its facade features a unique Hispano-Mexican double-headed eagle motif: the eagle devours a snake. The facades of the missions of Jalpan and Tancoyol combine iconographic elements of Catholic evangelization with indigenous worldviews. The Misión de Tancoyol is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Luz; its facade has the most elaborate iconography. This makes it possible to compare two distinct features of mission architecture: the double-headed eagle motif in Jalpan and the particularly elaborate iconography in Tancoyol.

Archaeology and history

The Tancama archaeological zone was a settlement of the Huastec culture. It reached its greatest flourishing between 700 and 900 AD. The complex consists of three plazas at different elevations and had a ceremonial and astronomical character. Tancama thus takes you back to a much earlier era than the missions, whose construction places Jalpan in the mid-18th century.

Another historical site is a fort built in 1576 that served as a prison for more than 50 years. Since 1991, it has housed and displayed a representative selection of the artistic, cultural, and historical heritage of the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro. The building thus brings together its long history as a prison and its role in presenting regional heritage.

Pame culture and crafts

In the town of Tancoyol, the Museo Comunitario Pame focuses on the culture and roots of the community of Jalpan de Serra, as well as Pame traditions and distinctive features. Craft production is also rooted in different places across the municipality: in Soledad de Guadalupe, a group of women makes ceramic products. In Las Nuevas Flores, several families of Pame origin make crafts from palm leaves. In El Rincón de Tancoyol, the family workshop “El Gavilán” specializes in saddlery. Ceramics, palm-leaf crafts, and saddlery thus offer different insights into the region’s craft culture.

Cecina and regional cuisine

Visitors can find cecina at Santa Cecilia in Jalpan de Serra. It is prepared with plenty of lemon and salt, and preparation begins the day before it is served. Cecina can also be bought raw there to take away. If you would like to include this specialty in your plans, check in advance to see what is currently available.

River, cave, and outdoor activities

The municipality has mountain biking routes for beginners as well as more challenging trails. Check trail conditions locally. You can hike along the banks of the Río Jalpan. A mountain guide from Valle Verde is required for the walk to a cave near Valle Verde; the walk takes about 30 minutes. The cave interior is rich in stalactites and stalagmites. Before setting out, check whether a mountain guide is available. Cycling, a riverside hike, and the guided walk to the cave are different ways to spend time outdoors.

The Presa Jalpan has been designated a Ramsar site since 2004 and is also a place for sport fishing. This combines an international designation with a specific leisure activity, adding another facet of the municipality to its cultural highlights.
