Hacienda Blanca brings together archaeological history, the heritage of a former hacienda, and a rural landscape. The archaeological site lies on a small hill at an elevation of about 1,580 meters, north of the Atoyac River and within the municipality of San Pablo Etla. Its location places Hacienda Blanca geographically and adds a landscape setting to its historical themes.

Archaeology and Early Ceramic Production

The archaeological site of Hacienda Blanca is considered one of the first sedentary agricultural communities to emerge in the Valley of Oaxaca. Its chronology extends from at least 1500 BCE to the Spanish conquest. The site's history therefore spans a long period that began well before the colonial era.

During the Early Formative period, Hacienda Blanca was also a specialized site for the craft production of ceramics; figurines were made in particular. Early agricultural settlement and ceramic production offer two distinct insights into this archaeological site: a long historical development and a specific craft function.

The Former Hacienda and Its History

The former Hacienda Blanca was a grain-producing complex. During the colonial period, it supplied grain to Antequera, as Oaxaca was then called. The hacienda's agricultural use was thus also linked to supplying Antequera.

The old hacienda was originally named Hacienda de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. During the Reform War, it was occupied by the French army. An old railway station in Hacienda Blanca also recalls the heyday of the Porfirian era. These historical connections span different periods and complement the archaeological story with the site's later history.

The Rural Landscape of Hacienda Blanca

The rural landscape of Hacienda Blanca includes old embankment roads and hydraulic canals. Together with its location on a small hill, these features shape the site's landscape setting. They complement the archaeological site and the former hacienda with the area's distinctive rural surroundings.

Nature and Trails in the Wider San Pablo Etla Travel Area

Three hiking trails have been established for visitors and recreation in the wider San Pablo Etla travel area. Authorized staff from the Ecotourism Office can take visitors to the trailheads in an off-road vehicle. Since arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them in advance.

One route in the San Pablo Etla area is the Sendero de los Beneficios del Bosque. It runs from the mid-mountain region to the urban area, passing through pine-oak vegetation, deciduous oak forests, and cultivated land. The wider area also contains a nature reserve with more than 3,000 hectares of forest. These nature and hiking opportunities form a distinct focus alongside the archaeology, hacienda history, and rural landscape of Hacienda Blanca.

This helps you clearly identify the thematic focus of your trip.
