Cuajimoloyas: Forest Trails, Mountain Views and Local Culture
Accommodation in Cuajimoloyas
Cuajimoloyas can be explored through its mountain views, forest trails and community cultural offerings. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you want to visit viewpoints, take a guided tour with explanations of the forest ecosystem, or plan around the regional mushroom fair. Rooms and camping are also different types of accommodation to consider.
Views and Nature Experiences
The Mirador Yaa-Cuetzi is located at 3,000 meters above sea level. At sunrise and sunset, it offers panoramic views of the clouds. The viewpoint’s zip line runs in a single stretch for over a kilometer and passes 100 meters above the town’s forested landscapes.
The Centro EcoturĂstico Yaa-Cuetzi offers opportunities to observe birds and other flora and fauna. Activities also include walks, horseback riding and mountain biking. The Centro also offers community-led tours and transport between the different locations.
Routes Through Forests and Mountain Landscapes
The route to Cañón del Coyote leads to viewpoints overlooking the mountain landscape. Llano de Tarajeas is suitable for walks and tours on horseback or by bicycle. On horseback or bicycle tours, you are accompanied by a guide who explains the local forest ecosystem and medicinal plants.
The trail at Llano del Fraile is three kilometers long, runs along the banks of a stream and passes through pine and oak forests to Tarajeas Park. Another route, Loma de Cucharilla (Cuajimoloyas–Latuvi), begins in the community of Cuajimoloyas and descends to the town of Latuvi. The route visits the La Cucharilla viewpoint, which offers panoramic views of Latuvi. San Antonio Cuajimoloyas is also one of thirteen destinations on the Ruta de la Sierra Juárez.
Fair, Handicrafts and Local Cuisine
The regional Feria de Hongos Silvestres began in 2000 and has been held every year since, on the third weekend of July. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the year of your trip. Visitors can also take part in workshops on making Pan serrano.
During group visits, you can meet a women’s cooperative that preserves mushrooms and makes handicrafts from Sarcina, the leaves of the Ocote pine. Trout is the main dish at the Comedores Tarajeas, La Zanja and El Bocadito.
