Discover Icamole
Accommodation in Icamole
Icamole is part of the “Región Arqueológica” tourist route in Nuevo León. It invites you to explore landscapes and flavors shaped by a cultural history spanning thousands of years. For your travel planning, this framework brings together history and regional cultural and landscape themes. The Battle of Icamole, previous guided visits, and the agricultural past offer different ways to get to know the place.
The route and regional themes
The “Región Arqueológica” route places Icamole within a tourist perspective that considers cultural history, landscapes, and flavors together. This gives you a framework for choosing what interests you: you can explore the historical events that took place here or learn about past activities and agricultural history. These themes have different focuses, but complement one another as facets of the town’s history.
If you are particularly interested in cultural history, the Battle of Icamole provides a specific historical reference point. At the same time, previous guided visits show that both a flower field and the riverbank featured in visits. Agricultural history, in turn, connects Icamole with barley cultivation. This lets you explore the destination through more than a single historical reference.
The battle and its legacy
The Battle of Icamole took place on May 20, 1876, during the Revolution of Tuxtepec. The forces of Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada and Porfirio Díaz took part. After his defeat at Icamole, Díaz became known as “El Llorón de Icamole.” The event and the nickname are connected, but tell different stories: the battle identifies the date and participants, while the nickname refers to Díaz’s defeat.
To understand the town’s history, you can consider these two aspects separately: the historical event on the one hand, and the legacy of the nickname associated with it on the other. Both relate to Icamole, but offer different ways to learn about the town’s history.
Previous guided tours and visits
There used to be a guided visit to a cempasúchil flower field in the Ejido Icamole. The history and origins of the flower were explained during the visit. Another earlier tour led by municipal tourism staff visited the riverbank. The two activities had different focuses: the flower field visit centered on the history and origins of a plant, while the other tour focused on the riverbank.
If you would like to travel to Icamole for an activity like this, check in advance whether a tour is currently available. The previous visits do not constitute a set schedule for your trip. This way, you can plan around whether a suitable activity is actually being offered.
Rock art site and access
One way to reach the rock art site in Icamole starts in the community of Icamole and is called “La Presa.” If you are planning to visit the site, please check in advance whether access is possible and what trail conditions you should be aware of. The name of the access route is a specific point of reference; current conditions are what matter for planning your visit.
Landscape, water supply, and agriculture
The history of the landscape also includes a dam that supplied water to the Ejido Icamole. It was destroyed by flooding caused by Hurricane Alex in mid-2010. This event adds a specific setback to local infrastructure and water supply to the area’s cultural history.
Another historical connection is to agriculture: during an agricultural boom, much of the barley for Cervecería Cuauhtémoc in Monterrey was produced in Icamole. This links the town’s history with barley cultivation and a buyer in Monterrey. For travelers interested in regional flavors and their origins, this adds an agricultural perspective to the route’s cultural themes.
