Ocuituco offers several ways to shape your stay: the Ex-Convento de Santiago Apóstol and its architectural history, community cultural venues such as the Casa de Cultura and Museo Comunitario, and outdoor activities at Cerro de Jumiltepec within the municipality. You can tailor your stay to your interest in history, culture, or time outdoors.

The Ex-Convento de Santiago Apóstol

In Ocuituco, the first Augustinian convent built in New Spain was dedicated to the Apostle Santiago Apóstol. The church was completed between 1536 and 1541. Ocuituco is a stop in Morelos on the Route of the 14 Monasteries; the 14 monasteries were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1994. The local architectural history is therefore part of a broader regional cultural and historical context.

Several architectural features can be distinguished at the Ex-Convento de Santiago Apóstol. The façade is made of dressed stone. Four anthropomorphic—that is, human-shaped—figures stand at the main entrance. The choir window has a round arch and an alfiz, a frame surrounding the arch. The cloister contains a hexagonal fountain decorated with six carved lions. The cloister is among the most austere. Inside, remnants of original frescoes with friezes have been preserved; the vaults also feature coffered decoration. The broad buttresses protected the Indigenous community.

These features are spread across the façade, entrance, window, cloister, and interior. The architectural impression is therefore not limited to a single building element, but also encompasses the complex’s varied forms and decorations.

Community Cultural Venues

The Casa de Cultura Ocuituco is a community cultural center founded in 2009. It has spaces for cooking classes as well as music, fine arts, visual arts, and performing arts. The classes and programs on offer may vary. An auditorium with seating for 400 complements the classrooms with a venue for larger audiences.

The Museo Comunitario de Ocuituco exhibits paintings by artists from the municipality, as well as an archaeological stone. While the Casa de Cultura offers spaces for a range of activities and an auditorium, the museum focuses on its exhibits. Since collection details may change, check which exhibits are currently on display before visiting.

Outdoor Activities

Cerro de Jumiltepec is used for outdoor recreational activities within the municipality of Ocuituco. Camping and hiking are possible in marked areas. Check local conditions before traveling. A special event in December includes the illumination of Cerro de Jumiltepec. If this event is important to your plans, confirm the arrangements for the relevant year locally.
