Atlatlahucan offers a range of reasons to visit: the Convento de San Mateo Apóstol, part of a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble; cultural offerings; and nature tourism in the Corredor Biológico Chichinautzin. Municipal festivals are another draw, and their schedules and dates are important for planning. Whether you are interested in monastery heritage, a cultural event or activities in the protected area, each choice gives your stay a different focus.

Monastery Heritage and Historic Buildings

INAH lists the Convento de San Mateo Apóstol as one of the 15 components of the serial World Heritage Site Primeros monasterios del siglo XVI en las laderas del Popocatépetl. Its buttresses give the Ex-Convento a fortress-like appearance. In the center of Atlatlahucan is the Templo y Exconvento de San Mateo, whose atrium adjoins the Plaza principal. The Popocatépetl can be seen from the atrium. If you plan to take in the view, confirm current access conditions locally. A family tree of the Augustinians can be seen in the complex’s open chapel.

The Museo Histórico y Natural Calmécac also explores the history of the monastery: its tour includes an explanation of the founding of the Convento de San Mateo Apóstol. Another trace of the town’s history is the Antigua Estación Cascada, a historic railway station in Atlatlahucan. INAH declared it a historic monument in 1993. The cultural sites mentioned here thus range from religious heritage to railway history.

Cultural Offerings and Exhibitions

The Casa de Cultura Atlatlahucan has a 144 m² space for temporary exhibitions. Its cultural offerings also include workshops in folkloric dance, theater, painting, symphonic wind music, rondalla, regional music, string orchestra and piano. Talks and painting exhibitions are also on the program. The range covers different art forms, from music and dance to painting and theater. Check current dates before your trip if you would like to attend a workshop or event.

Nature Tourism in the Protected Area

The Corredor Biológico Chichinautzin has been designated an Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna since 1988. The protected area’s eastern section extends into Atlatlahucan, among other places. Nature tourism in the protected area includes hiking, camping, mountain biking and rappelling, as well as observing flora and fauna. These activities range from outdoor pursuits to nature watching. If this is an important focus for your trip, you can consider the protected area’s offerings as you plan.

Festivals in the Municipio Atlatlahucan

The Feria del Cuarto Viernes de Cuaresma is held annually in the Municipio Atlatlahucan. Centered on faith, tradition and community, it attracts thousands of families and visitors. In 2026, the fair took place from March 4 to 16. That year’s program included processions, Chinelo comparsas, music, traditional dances, jaripeos and the traditional Toro de Once. The program also featured an extensive presentation of regional cuisine. Since the specific dates vary, check the dates for each edition if you want to plan your trip around the fair.

The Carnaval de Atlatlahucan is also associated with cultural identity and tourism in the eastern region of Morelos. In 2026, the comparsas Las Negras and los Tatais paraded through streets in the municipality; local families and organizations help keep this tradition alive. The participating comparsas can vary from one edition to the next. The Feria and Carnaval therefore offer different glimpses of municipal festival traditions, although their programs are not the same each year.
