Bocaneo is a settlement that existed before the conquest. Its historic character is reflected in San Pedro Church and the main square, as well as in the production of glass ornaments in San Pedro Bocaneo. For planning your trip, the town brings together architectural history, a craft passed down through generations, and a historic culinary tradition. The following details offer concrete points of reference to help you explore these themes during a stay in Bocaneo.

San Pedro Church and the Town’s History

San Pedro is a historic building dating from the 16th century. The church retains its original masonry walls; the current vault dates from the late 18th century. These structural features reflect different periods: the walls belong to the original complex, while the current vault dates from considerably later.

The atrium has three traditional entrances. In its center stands a stone cross bearing symbols of the Passion; its base is dated 1727. The altar and tower also have clearly described features: the neoclassical altar houses a depiction of Saint Peter that came from Toledo, Spain. The tower consists of three sections and is topped by an octagonal lantern and a stone cross. Together with the masonry and vault, these elements provide several concrete points of reference for the architectural history of San Pedro.

The main square is also part of the town’s historic character. Its arcaded porticoes preserve some of the area’s distinctive character. Juan Bautista Figueroa helped build Bocaneo’s churches and cemeteries. Records from 1780 report that the church and sacristy were praised for their cleanliness and ornamentation.

Glass Ornaments: Craft and Sales

A report from November 2025 described the production of glass ornaments at a family-run workshop in San Pedro Bocaneo. The process described included glass blowing and metallizing, as well as individual painting and decoration. The family tradition was said to span about 50 years; it was started by the parents of the current producer. This approximate timeframe provides context for the craft without giving it an exact founding year.

It was also reported in November 2025 that the workshop offered ornaments in various sizes for retail and wholesale, and opened its doors to members of the public to make purchases. Before visiting, check whether the workshop is currently open to visitors and sales are taking place.

Historic Bread Tradition and Directions

The local history of bread is also linked to a theory: a historic method of breadmaking is said to have spread from San Pedro Bocaneo to Acámbaro. The ingredients cited for this method are sugar, lard, pulque, and flour. These ingredients give the tradition a specific culinary dimension; the proposed transmission to Acámbaro remains a possible explanation.

Bocaneo is also located on the route connecting Zinapécuaro and the Morelia–Maravatío federal highway. The time estimate should be treated as approximate guidance; check your route for the day of travel.
