In El Oro, mining and the railway tell of two distinct worlds of work. Museums, the former railway station, and the Socavón San Juan bring these stories to life; architecture, La Chiva, and landscape attractions add to the picture. This gives you several themes to choose from when planning your trip: exhibitions and architecture, a local beverage tradition, cycling, or nature attractions with a seasonal dimension.

Mining and the Railway

The Museo de la Minería de El Oro explores minerals and their extraction. Its collection includes 250 minerals and just over 200 objects, including photographs, plans, and tools. Five permanent exhibition rooms provide a setting for the collection. There is also machinery and equipment used to extract minerals. Mineral specimens and tools of the trade thus come together under one theme: what was extracted and what was used to extract it.

Along the accessible section of the Socavón San Juan, you can see mining tools, documents, mineral samples, and a statue honoring miners. Check the current admission conditions on site before your visit. The former railway station is now the Museo del Ferrocarril El Oro. Photographs and tools used at the station during the railway era are on display there. While the mining museum focuses on minerals and their extraction, the railway museum illustrates how the former station operated.

Architecture and Local Tradition

Two stylistic features come together at El Oro’s Palacio Municipal: its façade is eclectic, while the interior is designed in the Art Nouveau style. When exploring the architecture, it is worth looking at both levels—outside and in.

La Chiva is part of the local character: an emerald-green drink that has been handcrafted in El Oro from anise and herbs for more than 100 years. This tradition offers a different facet of the town’s history from its museums and buildings: here, a drink with its own distinctive color and recipe takes center stage. The Plaza Gastronómica y Artesanal is located at the corner of Avenida del Ferrocarril and Ángela Peralta, in the center of El Oro, Mexico, postal code 50600.

Cycling Route and Activities

The Ciclopista Vías Verdes uses eight kilometers of disused railway track and connects the municipal seat with the municipality of El Mogote. The railway therefore features in two contexts: as former infrastructure commemorated by the railway museum, and as the basis for a cycling route. As conditions along the route may change, check it before setting out.

At Parque Ecoturístico El Mogote, a 200-meter zip line crosses a ravine more than 80 meters deep. If you plan to try this activity, check its current operating status on site.

Landscape and Season

Together with Presa Victoria, Presa Brockman is part of a 1,564-hectare Santuario del Agua y Forestal, designated on October 13, 2004. The two reservoirs are therefore part of the same designated area.

El Mogote waterfall is near the destination. It is visible only during the rainy season and is a few minutes from the municipal seat. If you want to see the waterfall, plan your trip around the rainy season. This seasonal nature attraction is therefore different from the museums and cycling route, whose descriptions are not tied to this time of year.
