Acaxochitlán: Water, Forest Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Acaxochitlán
At Presa del Tejocotal, colorful boat rides and horseback rides among the forest trees take center stage. Acaxochitlán also offers nature trails, waterfalls and cultural attractions, from the archaeological museum to regional dishes. If you are planning a stay here, you can choose from activities on the water, walks and insights into local traditions.
Water, Views and Walks
Colorful boat rides are offered at Presa del Tejocotal, as are horseback rides among the forest trees. Presa Omiltemetl is suitable for walking. Its dam and the Llano are considered recommended viewpoints for their beauty and easy access. Presa de Santa Ana Tzacuala has semi-transparent stretches of water and a forested setting. Long walks are also suitable there. Two restaurants and a small park with lawns and barbecue areas add to the facilities.
Forest Trails and Waterfalls
A footpath leads to the Cascadas de Chimalapa, where you can hear birds and see the regional flora. Nearby is the Cascada de Salto de San Francisco, a waterfall with a drop of approximately 30 meters. Las Vueltas adds a historical connection to these natural attractions: the approximately two-kilometer-long forest trail once served as a royal road. Its approximate length and former function give the trail a different character from the footpath at Chimalapa, which invites visitors to observe nature.
Theme Park, Museum and Crafts
Sendero Mágico de los Duendes offers something different: the theme park grounds are surrounded by lush vegetation of pines, firs and oaks, and feature a total of 110 depictions of goblins. The forest setting and goblin theme together define the place. The Museo Arqueológico de Acaxochitlán is located in the Palacio Municipal building. In Santa Catarina, women embroider Quechquemitls and blouses as part of their Indigenous attire. This textile tradition adds another cultural perspective to the museum’s archaeological focus.
Regional Cuisine and Fruit Wines
Molotes are among Acaxochitlán’s typical dishes and can be enjoyed year-round. Fruit wines are also regional specialties, including Acachul, apple, plum, capulín and blackberry wine. They can be purchased at the Apple Fair or at local factories. If you plan to buy from a particular factory, check its availability before your trip.
Getting There and Planning Your Hotel Stay
Acaxochitlán is 71 kilometers from the state capital. The drive via the México–Tuxpan federal highway, also known as Highway 132, takes approximately one and a half to two hours; travel times may vary. If you are planning a hotel stay in Acaxochitlán, use the approximate driving time to guide your arrival and allow some extra time.
